The New York Red Bulls released their first official preseason training camp roster. All 21 of the current contracted roster class has gathered in Bradenton, Florida to begin sessions in preparation for the team’s March 1st opener in Portland against the Timbers.
Joining the team are recent draft picks, academy players and trialists aiming to earn a spot with the team.
Here is a look at some of the new faces in camp:
DRAFTED PLAYERS AND ACADEMY TRIALISTS
Ian Christianson, the Red Bulls lone pick in the 2013 SuperDraft, has joined the team in Florida. First round supplemental pick Ryan Clark and fellow midfielder Michael Bustamante are there as well. All three feature as midfielders – an area where the team is woefully thin.
None are currently signed with New York.
They will be joined by Red Bull Academy forward, Ethan Decker. The Manahawkin, New Jersey native is a State standout who stands 5’10″ and 150lbs. He’s the third leading scorer for the Red Bull U17/18 team.
Interestingly enough, other supplemental picks including Ben Fisk (Pick #32), Marc Cintron (Pick #34), Stephane Diop (Pick #51) and Andrew Ribiero (Pick #70) were unaccounted for. EoS could not confirm their status at the release of this article.
As we covered this week, several invitee names have leaked in connection with the team. Spanish left midfielder Ruben Izqueirdo, USL Pro standout Nicki Patterson, former Red Bull Tyler Ruthven and towering former Union defender Toni Stahl make up the bulk of that list.
One new name supplied by the team is midfielder Marius Obekop. The 20 year old Cameroonian is described as an attacking player, capable of playing a strikers role. He was a part of Cameroon’s U-17 team and has mostly plied his trade within his home country.
