Red Bulls acquire Sene from Revolution for Akpan, allocation money

As promised, New York Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh has triggered a trade with the New England Revolution that brings forward Saer Sene and an international roster slot to Harrison in exchange for Andre Akpan and an undisclosed amount of allocation money.

“Saer, who can play wide or up front, will add a different dimension and another option to our attack,” said Roxburgh. “We’re excited to bring him aboard and at the same time, we wish Andre all the best with his new club.”

Sene, 27, began his career strongly with the Revolution in 2012, scoring 11 goals in 25 appearances (23 starts). His production fell by half the following year, scoring all of five goals in 24 appearances (14 starts), missing nine matches with an ACL injury.

This year, the burly French native has become surplus goods for the Revolution, appearing only ten times, earning five starts and scoring a single goal in 395 minutes.

Likewise, Andre Akpan has found it difficult to break through the Red Bulls’ crowded striker corps. The 26-year-old striker has managed all of 12 appearances with the club since joining the Red Bulls in March of last season.

If healthy, Sene represents an upgrade in the team’s depth chart. The French native has a track record of success in MLS and can prove a vital game changer off the bench. A natural left footed player, Sene can also challenge for starting minutes on the left of midfield; an area the team has struggled to fill all season long.

The international roster slot allows for some leeway if the Red Bulls decide to pick up foreign based free agents.  With the trade out of the way, team sources say New York will be on the market for a pair of additional players — likely free agents or trialists.
