Marsch addresses reports of Luyindula retirement

KANSAS CITY – Drama unfolded both on and off the field as the New York Red Bulls faced Sporting Kansas City Sunday evening.

Conspicuous in his absence, the whereabouts of Peguy Luyindula became a hot button topic throughout the night.

As play ensued on the field, EOS learned the Frenchman had taken leave of the team to ponder his retirement.

Monday morning, head coach Jesse Marsch addressed the rumors.

“There is nothing to announce other than to say Peguy is taking some time to think about what his future is going to be,” he acknowledged.  “That is the only thing to talk about, in respect, to Peguy to give him some time.”

As reported Sunday evening, Luyindula has been pondering retirement for the better part of a year.  In fact, he took a similar leave of action last year as then-coach Mike Petke eschewed the French playmaker for other options at midfield. With yet another crowded midfield to contend with this season, and a plethora of business projects demanding his attention off-field, Luyindula has once again taken leave of the club to contemplate his future.

While sources tell us Luyindula has not officially signed off on his retirement just yet, a decision on his playing career may come as early as this week.
