Jozy Altidore made an immediate impact on the field for Toronto, with two goals in his first game. For his efforts, MLS named Altidore its player of the week.

Altidore’s two goals contributed to a 3-1 victory for TFC on the road against the Vancouver Whitecaps. The game set viewership records in Canada for TSN, in part because it was the debuts of Altidore and Italian midfielder Sebastian Giovinco.

Giovinco was instrumental in creating the first goal, though Altidore still had to dribble past the keeper and finish. Altidore’s second goal came on a chipped penalty, which he himself earned in the game’s 90th minute.

Toronto effectively traded Jermain Defoe to Sunderland for Altidore in the offseason. Defoe, for what it’s worth, was named MLS player of the week after scoring two goals in his first game for Toronto.

Clint Dempsey was the only other player to score twice in the opening weekend. He too scored one of his goals on a penalty.
