New York Cosmos announce creation of NPSL reserve team

Who said MLS has the market cornered on reserve teams?

The New York Cosmos announced Thursday the creation of a reserve side, New York Cosmos B, set to begin play in 2015 under the National Premier Soccer League umbrella.

“This is a key step for us in terms of our player development plans,” said Erik Stover, Chief Operating Officer of the Cosmos. “The creation of New York Cosmos B to play in the NPSL provides us with the flexibility and a structured development path for our reserve players to flourish. We see it as a training ground that will not only help develop younger players vying for more first-team action but also help integrate and accelerate the progress of our academy players.”

Cosmos B will play in the Northeast Region’s North Atlantic Conference. This is the same conference which included the New York Red Bulls U-23 team over the past several seasons. Cosmos B will join the conference which includes the Brooklyn Italians, Greater Lowell United FC, New York Athletic Club, Rhode Island Reds, Seacoast United Mariners, and Seacoast United Phantoms.

“The NPSL is tremendously excited to welcome the New York Cosmos into the league,” NPSL Chairman Joe Barone stated. “The Cosmos are known globally and have been such an important part of the American soccer community for many years. Personally, this is an incredible honor as I remember with great joy attending my first Cosmos match at the age of eight. Having them join us is one of the great moments in the history of our league and we couldn’t be more delighted.”

The Cosmos become the fourth NASL team to field an NPSL reserve side, joining the Carolina RailHawks, Atlanta Silverbacks, and Minnesota United.

As per the team’s release, details for the Cosmos B training facilities and location of games are still in the process of being finalized and will be announced at a later date.

interesting picture of Gio to pick.

It’s EoS’s go-to Gio pic. Kinda like how Petke’s go-to pic was that close-up of him shouting.

But I like this Gio pic because I like an excited coach.

Excellent news! And a perfect way to both set the foundations for future growth for the team and help promote local teams in the NY-LI area. Kudos! :)

My only question is will this be a legit reserve team with players under contract with Cosmos? Otherwise it is really no different than the Red Bull U-23’s right?
