Henry announces retirement, joins Sky Sports team

The brilliant playing career of Thierry Henry is over.

The former New York Red Bulls captain, freshly departed from his four year stay in MLS, has announced his retirement via Facebook early Tuesday morning.

“After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football,” he wrote. “It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved with AS Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal FC, FC Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French National Team that have made my time in the game so special.”

Henry leaves behind a highly decorated career, winning major hardware with every team he has performed on including Monaco (Ligue 1 title), Arsenal (Two League titles, three FA Cup), Barcelona (Two League titles, UEFA) and the Red Bulls (Supporters’ Shield). Under the MLS umbrella, Henry maintained double-digit scoring numbers throughout every full season in New York, leading him towards three MLS Best XI recognitions and four MLS All-Star appearances. He also won an ESPY for Best MLS Player in 2013.

As if that wasn’t news enough, Henry also revealed his next career path. Fresh off of his role as a World Cup commentator, the Arsenal legend will join Sky Sports, likely resuming his role as a football analyst.

“I will hopefully share some of the insights, observations and experiences I have learnt over the years with you guys,” Henry said of his new venture.

“I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience,” he continued. “I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part.”
