Despite the hype surrounding this weekends friendly between the New York Red Bulls and Arsenal, the English side is fielding quite an underwhelming roster for the showcase.
Alexis Sanchez, Lukas Podolski, Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud, Joel Campbell, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Thomas Vermaelen and several others have opted out of the showdown in Harrison — most taking a post-World Cup break in action. In their stead, Aaron Ramsey, Wojciech Szczesny, Mikel Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Tomas Rosicky and Kieran Gibbs are amongst a handful of recognizable stars that will lineup against Thierry Henry’s Red Bulls this Saturday at Red Bull Arena.
Here is the full roster:
One name which may excite the hardcore fans is that of German-American Gedion Zelalem. The 17-year-old wing-sided midfielder is a USMNT target and an exciting prospect in the Gunners system. Reports say Zelalem is looking to obtain U.S. citizenship, joining a host of current dual nationals on the American first team.
Red Bull fans will get their first look at the prospect up close this Saturday. The encounter will be televised this weekend at 5PM on ESPN2.
