How close was Arsenal legend and German International star Jens Lehmann to a move towards the New York Red Bulls?

The answer may surprise you.

Speaking to Lehmann in an exclusive interview in Midtown Manhattan, the backstop for Arsenal’s revered “Invincibles” team tells EoS an offer was on the table to join the Harrison side. Twice.

“I had an offer from Red Bull,” Lehmann tells EoS. “At the time, we were just coming from England, settling into Munich and I said no, I can’t come this year.”

That was 2008 — but the interest didn’t stop there.

According to Lehmann, Red Bull made a second offer to attract the German international superstar — a move that circulated throughout the rumor mill briefly in the summer of 2011. “The next year came another offer,” said Lehmann. “I said, ‘Okay, I am coming.’ But then, they have taken Frank Rost for some reason. And so, unfortunately, I couldn’t make it then.”

Lehmann would have been 41-years-old at the time of that second offer.

Judging by the timetable Lehmann laid out, the first offer must have been placed in the early years of the new Red Bull ownership. That is about the time of his Munich move. As for the second offer, Rost joined New York in 2011, giving a more concise time frame for that negotiation. When asked whether he consulted with former teammate Thierry Henry, Lehmann stated that he wasn’t with the club yet, perhaps indicating a lapse in memory between the two offers.

Lehmann went on to retire with Arsenal in 2011.

Lehmann is currently on the “Bundesliga Legends” tour, which takes players like Lehmann and Lothar Matthaus (former Metrostar) around the world for meetings with fans and press to promote the league, all in an effort to drum up interest for the 2015-16 Bundesliga season which began this weekend, broadcast in the United States nationwide on Fox Sports.

Why can’t he still sign for mls? Isn’t he old enough yet?

  • David Carlin, Farm Animal Molester

Strap him into a wheelchair and put him goal! He’s in his MLS prime! Hahaha

  • Snooki

And twice he realized…..I hate New Jersey….everyone hates New Jersey.

  • Mad Cow

Must be a really slow news week

  • true open cup fan

the cos-shmos have the true retired guys at 40 yrs old like raul, so they should take him. + he can lose just as easily to all the USL teams like all the other nasl keepers did in the US open cup this year.

true open cup fans know the nasl was 0-7 vs USL teams, so I guess they are really division 3 or 4 in the US with all those losses.

      I like this guy.

Cosmos beat defending usl champ this year. Get a clue amigo.
        .
Nothing against usl, glad it is building the soccer pyramid scheme for mls.

The Cosmos beat Sac. Republic in a friendly. Doesn’t really count. By the way they got over 20K for that match. It’s refreshing to see teams that don’t need to go to El Salvador or Cuba or even Hong Kong to get decent crowds. Maybe the Cosmos should go ask them for pointers.

          • OpenCupFan

DangerMan! Welcome back to your mls botting ways. You were not missed at all! Welcome back!
            .
Hey since your such an expert on SacRepublic maybe you tell us what happened to Preki?
            .
Damn, mls botting makes you an expert on everything! So amazing.

  • DanGerman

So what exactly did I say was “MLS botting”? The Cosmos played the Sac. Rep. in a preseason friendly, right? So that’s a true statement friendly’s are meaningless. The Cosmos have never gotten a home crowd of over 20K, right? So there goes another true statement. So it seems that “MLS botting” is could for telling the truth so I’m just going to keep dropping true statements and let people like yourself keep huffing the glue that the Cosmos feed you.

    • OpenCupFan

So you’re saying mls bots are not self-aware?

      • DanGerman

Oh I am aware that everything I stated is fact. Are you? You see that is the only thing missing from the Cosmos that is a sense of reality. Hopefully it doesn’t cost them. I have a question for you, and I am being serious now. What happens to you if the Cosmos fold?

        • OpenCupFan

But are you aware of being an mls bot? That’s a real question – real, like when you said you were a Cosmos fan but couldn’t figure out how to buy tickets to the game, maybe you should gave used a French sports ticket website.
          .
Another real question, how are you the fan of a league that tries to manipulate competition so the big market teams dominate?
          .
Another real question, how do you support a league that rakes money from kids soccer academies? Not as a one time occurrence but as a policy.
          .
Last real question for now, why do you say you’re a Cosmos fan?

I AM a Cosmos fan, but I also SEE that the team is in serious trouble due to the lack of relevance and stadium issues. So getting 4k on a beautiful sunday afternoon is okay with you? Across in NJ they got over 20K! I just refuse to believe all the BS the team shells out. You also fail to give a shred of evidence on anything you say. MLS manipulating for the big markets? You mean like the NASL that let the cosmos come into the fall season without playing in the spring? Something like that? Oh and the stealing kids from youth soccer teams? Which players and where, or do you mean like the Cosmos did with that u17 player that they signed off a youth team in SD? Something like that? You see I’m not blind and have no wish to be, you also failed to answer my question. WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU IF THE COSMOS FOLD?!

    • ParisDangermane

      Oui!

Et….Je nes parle pas japonais avec mon dentiste en frente de le metro!

      • DanGerman

En fait, je fais parle un peu japonais. Ainsi que certains Francais. Mais ne vous parlex espagnol.

        • ParisDangermane

          Oui!

          Tres Fantastique!

  • true open cup fan

sorry, true open cup fans are USA all the way and don’t speak other languages besides english, haha.

the nasl was 0-7 against USL teams in the Open Cup, so if you are a fan of the open cup you would probably support MLS first since they win all of them, and USL 2nd since they beat the hell out of all the nasl teams in the competition.

also, friendly results don’t mean anything, the Red Bulls USL team beat Chelsea, so does that mean they are better than Premier league champs?

  • OpenCupFan

    True McWendys bot –
    .
It’s clear you don’t understand, but every game means something, that’s why the Cosmos play to win every game.
    .
Don’t worry, when every team in your league makes the playoffs it’s easy to understand why you would think some games don’t mean anything. – like the whole mls season.

Except that the Cosmos made the playoffs ten games into the season thanks to the absurd NASL format. They won’t play a meaningful game from about May until November. Not that anyone notices.

      • OpenCupFan

NASL format beats mls whole season means nothing format all day long.
        .
Be honest, do you watch NJRB games more for the fights between teammates or for sprinklers in the middle of the game?
        .
I only watch mls games to see Cosmos beat down McWendys.

        • slowleftarm

Did you watch the game at RBA this year?

  • OpenCupFan

Anyway, I heard mls was going to sign Methusaleh. Garber has already named him to the AllStar game next year and the mls team of the century.
