Ashley Cole signs with the LA Galaxy

The LA Galaxy have signed former Premier League defender Ashley Cole.

In 17 years with Arsenal and Chelsea, Cole was one of the top left backs in the Premier League, making 385 appearances in league play. He earned 107 caps for his native England. But most recently, with Roma, he has managed to make only 11 appearances in a season and a half’s time.

The Galaxy have not made Cole a designated player in this deal, which means his salary is below the threshold of roughly $475,000 per year.

Cole’s arrival in LA will force more changes for an LA backline that has already suffered the loss of Omar Gonzalez this offseason. Cole’s presence will likely push Robbie Rogers to right back.

Cole was previously linked to MLS in the summer of 2014, but publicly rebuffed the idea. “I had offers from the USA, but I’m not ready to relax on a beach yet,” he said, a fact that will surely be brought up again.

After Cole’s crappy rant about MLS a couple years ago. It’s almost facepalmy that L.A. Galaxy, or any team, would sign this guy.
