Austin Berry, Nana Attakora in Cosmos camp

The New York Cosmos are back in the Big Apple preparing for their preseason jaunt — and they are bringing some guests along for the ride.

Defenders Austin Berry and Nana Attakora join the club as trialists and will travel with the team to Hong Kong for training and participation in the Lunar New Year Cup; a one-off match against Hong Kong Football Team.

Berry, 26, is a 6’2″ defender currently signed with the Philadelphia Union.  He makes his way to New York from the Union’s training camp, given permission to trial with the team after a disappointing 2014 in Philadelphia.  A former MLS rookie of the year, Berry was a standout center back with the Chicago Fire just a year before his arrival at Philadelphia.  Looking to shore up their defense, the Union plucked down $100k to acquire the defender from the Fire early last year.

Despite their highest hopes, Berry lost his starting spot by mid-May, making six starts but failing to challenge for the center back role for the rest of the season.

Attakora, 25, is also coming off of a difficult 2014.  In fact, the Canadian international has failed to find stability at the club level since leaving Toronto FC in 2011.  Now, he becomes an option on the paper-thin defense of the New York Cosmos which is sorely in need of recruits.

As of now, the Cosmos have all of five defenders on roster — Hunter Freeman, Hunter Gorskie, Roversio, Carlos Mendes and Ayoze.

New York travel to Hong Kong next week, with the Lunar New Year Cup broadcast live on One World Sports on February 19th (3 a.m. ET).
