The New York Cosmos may not be able to retain the services of their entire 2016 Soccer Bowl Championship winning side, but they are doing their damnedest to try.

Their latest in a string of returning players is Spanish fullback, Ayoze. The 31-year-old defender has been a fixture with the New York Cosmos, joining as their second ever signing in 2013. Since then, he has played in 92 matches with the team, starting 90 matches while scoring three goals and nine assists.

“I am happy to rejoin the Cosmos, my intention was always to be here this year so I am happy that the team survived,” Ayoze said in a club statement. “I’ve had many discussions with Gio and feel confident that the club will continue in the right direction.”

“Ayoze brings great quality to the team,” added Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese. “He is very talented with a lot of experience. He is part of the core of our defense and I’m happy to have him back with us this season.”

Ayoze is the 14th member of the club to sign for the upcoming season, and the 12th members of the 2016 side to follow suit. Walter Restrepo and Juan Guerra are the lone players that were not a member of last year’s championship winning side.
