Pele, Beckenbauer to welcome Raul to New York in Cosmos opener

Pele is no stranger to New York Cosmos home openers. In fact, he has helped kick off festivities on the team’s 2013 and 2014 campaigns

His pal Franz Beckenbauer, however, has never been part of the festivities.

Until now.

The legendary German midfielder and beloved Cosmos figure will be on hand with Brazilian great Pele to help inaugurate the 2015 Spring campaign and welcome Spanish star Raul to the team’s ranks. This will be the first time Beckenbauer has made an appearance on behalf of his former club. “The Emperor” featured in 132 matches with the Cosmos from 1977-1980, and then again in 1983, scoring 21 goals for the club and helping them to three North American Soccer League titles.

Pele and Beckenbauer will be joined by a host of former teammates at the April 18th home opener against the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Hofstra’s James Shuart Stadium. This will be New York’s third match of the season, following a two-game road stand to start the Spring campaign.

The Cosmos begin their season on April 8th when New York travel to Florida to take on long-time rivals, Fort Lauderdale Strikers. This will be Raul’s first professional match in a Cosmos uniform.

We haven’t yet seen Franz (to my knowledge) at any nasl cosmos’ functions likely because he’s the person who sold Dietrich Mateschitz on buying the MetroStars and more closely identifies with RBNY in this town…

I’m told there’s been some ups and downs in that relationship (Franz / Matescihitz) and maybe it’s reached a point where Franz no longer sees himself as part of the Red Bull family…

Or maybe he just feels it’s time to reconnect with some of his old comrades though I’m sure he and Pele have seen each other a lot over recent years…

Yeah, new team, new players, new organisation but lets pretend it has something to do with the overspending kings of the 70s!

    I love their business plan.
Just like TV wrestling it demands a suspension of belief.

This is the year cosmos mature and look at reality of going up against nycfc.
You can also say red bull but red bull is on the verge of becoming chivas 2.0
If cosmos act mature and not delusional, maybe MLS will work a deal with them.
