Belson Stadium to host Cosmos, Revolution match

Belson Stadium

by JAKE NUTTING

The New York Cosmos have announced Belson Stadium in Queens as the venue for their matchup with the New England Revolution in the U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff for the Round of 16 match on June 29 is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Cosmos have hosted cup matches at the St John’s University facility before, including this year’s third round win over the PDL’s Express. They hosted the third round match in the lead up to last year’s Open Cup in Belson as well. However, this is the first time they’ve hosted a MLS team at Belson, and likewise, the first time they host a fifth round match away from Shuart.

The NASL side is hoping to advance to the Quaterfinals of the Cup for the first time since they started participating in 2014. They have an impressive three wins against their first MLS opposition over the past three years, but they’ve fallen short to MLS sides every year in the following round. In 2014, the Philadelphia Union ousted the Cosmos at then-PPL Park and last year, the Red Bulls made short work of the Cosmos at Red Bull Arena.

This is kind of crazy. If you don’t have a home venue to play in, you shouldn’t be able to host the match.

    • Cirus

Not really, a few of the MLS clubs have been playing in smaller stadiums for these usoc matches and some of the NASL clubs as well

  • Rest of the World

Eric Stover “we cannot host MLS teams at Shuart Stadium….due to incidents and fan behavior”
Hofstra must be cracking down on Butts sitting in seats during sports venues at the Sh*thole of a location.
    GET OUT NOW COSMOS!!!!
    F Hofstra!

What’s the deal with their new stadium?
I wouldn’t be surprised if cosmos ownership sells if they fail with their stadium plan.
Also why not play at citi field and make tickets like 5$

    • MTF

Sell? To whom? They can’t attract fans, don’t have their own home, and are stuck in the NASL. Maybe sell and be moved out of New York.

Slight correction needed in the article…

In 2014, the Philadelphia Union ousted the Cosmos at then-PPL Park and last year, the Red Bulls made VERY short work of the Cosmos at Red Bull Arena.

    you’re welcome.

    • WelshRBNY

That Philly game was shady as hell. The Red Bulls match was a clear-cut, decisive victory

    • William

Right and we will make quick work of this global powerhouse called the Harrison Metrostars. Book it.

What became of Mitchel Field which Mr Stover mentioned before..Where Cosmos B play..Seats much more that Belson..or MCU…much better venues !!

  • El Eternauta

To me this is gold since I can bike to the stadium, saving money and avoiding LIRR is gold!

Big question can the Cosmos sell out the 2K stadium?
