Bill Edwards Issues Comment on “Record Fine” From NASL

Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards is not backing down from his criticisms of the level of officiating in the North American Soccer League.

After being hit with a “record fine” by the NASL front office for an open letter criticizing referees working league matches, Edwards has issued the following statement to Empire of Soccer.

I received the memo from the NASL early Friday morning regarding my fine for my comments about refereeing in the NASL.
I understand Commissioner Peterson had to fine me. I think we all know these problems exist and they never seem to get better.
I have had several conversations with Commissioner Peterson and others in the NASL about this very problem over the years. I felt compelled to speak up at this time as the owner of the Rowdies.
As for the fine this is probably money well spent. It has both fans, teams and others talking about the problem. Talk is good as it is the only way to resolve an issue.
I intend to continue to support this great game of soccer the best way I can. I am proud of my players, coaches, staff and our amazing fans for their support and I certainly understand everyones frustration.
I’m going to send Commissioner Peterson some extra money for the fine he will probably give me for making this statement.
Come On You Rowdies

Any publicity is good publicity for the NASL.

  • Fining Bill Edwards is like taking penalty kicks, he can keep shooting ’til he wins. Better to address this issue now, then move on to the next improvement.

I’m a Strikers fan but appreciate owners like Mr. Edwards standing the pervasive meritocracy in NASL officiating.

  • Love it! Go Bill! Come on you Rowdies!

  • Commissioner Peterson is not to the height of the role that competes to a league as the mythical NASL: THE ONLY TRUE SOCCER LEAGUE in North America. People and he that work with him or/and that he is chosen.
NASL needs people with passion and love for North American soccer…..and for mythical North American Soccer League.
    An Italian (NASL) fan.
