ORLANDO, Fla. – Cyle Larin is one name New York City FC would like to forget.

For the second time this season, the Canadian forward torched NYCFC, this time nailing a brace to put Orlando past the visiting Blues 2-1 — and keeping them in the thick of the playoff chase.

NYCFC took the early lead on a Kwame Watson-Siriboe blast, but two goals in the second from Larin was all the Lions needed to acquire three points. NYCFC (10-16-7, 37 pts.) remain eighth in the Eastern Conference, while Orlando (12-13-8, 44 pts.) trail Montreal (13-13-6, 45 pts.) by a single point for the final playoff spot with one game remaining in their season.

Andrea Pirlo was a scratch from the traveling 18 for New York City FC forcing Jason Kreis to shift Mix Diskerud in the middle, Ned Grabavoy on the right wing and Thomas McNamara on the left. Orlando charged the new look NYCFC from the onset, with Larin shanking a pair of strikes and Carlos Rivas missing right of Josh Saunders. An injury forced Ned Grabavoy off in the 22nd minute for Mehdi Ballouchy.

That did little to settle a nervy NYCFC. Veteran defender Chris Wingert lost possession mere moments after the Grabavoy substitution, causing a near scoring opportunity on the other end. Adrian Winter created a dangerous scoring opportunity, launching a shot that skipped just wide of the left post. Winter then set up Lucas Neill for a chance which also skipped wide. The Orlando onslaught continued with a laser header from Larin that was blocked by Saunders.

But despite all the Orlando pressure, it was NYCFC to score first. Off a corner kick, Mix Diskerud managed a shot from the left of goal which deflected off a defender and into the path of Watson-Siriboe who measured a volley and drilled it past Hall for the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Orlando found the tying goal in the second half thanks to a dangerous run and service from Corey Ashe. The veteran MLS defender dashed to the right of the box, sending a dangerous cross right at the head of the onrushing Larin to tie the game in the 62nd minute.

Larin, who scored a hat trick against NYCFC this summer, scored again eight minutes later, putting Orlando in front for good. Winter gathered the ball into the NYCFC zone, skipping past an injured Javier Calle and right at Josh Saunders, taking a shot at the keeper, collecting his rebound and feeding Larin for the go-ahead goal.

Larin managed another scoring opportunity moments later — but NYCFC did not. The visitors take their second loss in a row heading towards their final match of the regular season against New England Revolution at Yankee Stadium.
