The awards keep rolling in for New York Red Bulls II as the team’s leading scorer Brandon Allen is named USL 2016 Rookie of the Year.

Allen set the record for goals scored (15) in a rookie campaign and finished second in the Golden Boot race.

“Going into the USL, I think I was confident, but I also wanted to prove myself,” said Allen. “Towards the end of the season, I was feeling better about the way things were going, and I think my game started getting even better as the season went on.”

Allen signed with the New York Red Bulls senior team at the start of the year after completing a successful run with Georgetown University. He was immediately placed into the New York Red Bull II reserve squad but did make a few appearances in MLS, nearly scoring a goal in his first substitute appearance.

Allen finished his first season in USL with 15 goals and was a major part of his team’s USL Championship victory, scoring a hat trick in the final. He is only the second player to do so in USL history.

Where Allen goes from here will be interesting. The 23-year old has his sights set on MLS but could start next season with the USL side. He is also still up for one last award as USL’s Most Valuable Player.
