NYCFC focus on Queens, Brooklyn for stadium, label Aqueduct plans “premature”

New York City FC are shifting focus towards Queens and Brooklyn for a new soccer specific stadium.  That according to Martin Edelmen; a New York based property attorney and member of Manchester City’s board of directors.

“We had focused on the Bronx but that didn’t work out and we weren’t able to find anything else in the Bronx that made sense,” Edelman told the New York Daily News. “So we’re looking in Queens and Brooklyn, and each potential has to be analyzed for construction, for access to public transportation, for parking, it’s a very complicated process.

“There’s no rush, but there’s a rush. In other words we’re not going to just settle for something, we’re going to find a place where everybody is comfortable doing it, and it makes economic sense to do it. But we’re not just sitting and waiting for the place to come to us.”

Last week, New York Yankee President Randy Levine revealed NYCFC were “very, very close” to a stadium deal just across the street from Heritage Park, south of Yankee Stadium.  A change of administration meant the loss of a key ally in then-Mayor Mike Bloomberg, putting those plans to rest.  Prior to that endeavor, NYCFC inherited a year-long bid by MLS to seize control of land within Flushing Meadow Park; another plan that met an early demise.

Since then, the club has been connected with a plot of land in South Queens’ Aqueduct Racetrack; plans that Levine says are still in their infancy.

“We are looking at many, many sites,” Levine said, adding, “It is too premature to count on that.”
