Red Bulls, Tim Cahill mutually part ways

The long running soap opera is over.

The New York Red Bulls announced Monday afternoon that Australian midfielder Tim Cahill has left the club by mutual agreement.

“This decision was not made lightly, and it is the result of many conversations between our staff, Tim, and his agent,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Ali Curtis in a club statement. “After much deliberation, we have agreed that this decision is best for all involved. We thank Tim for his service to the organization.

“He positively impacted the growth of the beautiful game in the United States, MLS and for the Red Bulls. We are pleased that Tim will continue to be an ambassador for Red Bull moving forward.”

Terms of the decision were not disclosed.

Cahill signed with the Red Bulls as a Designated Player in July of 2012. He was a pivotal figure in the Red Bulls chase for the Supporters’ Shield, managing 12 goals through 29 club appearances, earning team MVP honors and league Best XI and All-Star distinctions.

Despite those lofty achievements, Cahill was consistently in a state of flux with the team. Unable to find a fit in his customary striker role, Cahill slotted in midfield for New York, with occasional stints up top — and even on defense. His absence due to international duty ripped him away from the club in 2014, causing a rift between the player and Red Bull management. Disagreements over a contract extension further put the two parties at odds, laying the seeds for his eventual departure.

In his final remarks to the club, Cahill expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play with the team and looked fondly at the accomplishments of his tenure.

“I’ve enjoyed every moment of my time at the Red Bulls and leave with great memories,” said Cahill. “I joined with the ambition of helping to grow and positively affect soccer in the US and I feel immensely proud of what we achieved as a team during my time in the MLS. Winning the Supporter’s Shield, was without doubt, one of the best moments I have experienced in my career and I am now looking forward to my next chapter, of which I will announce in due course.”
