Someone has noticed Lloyd Sam’s red-hot season.

The New York Red Bulls winger has been called into the Ghanaian National Team — the 31-year-old’s first senior international call in six years.

Sam joins Ghana on Saturday and will stay with the team through Tuesday ahead of their match against Canada at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.. He was last called up by Ghana in August of 2009, but an injury kept him away from the team.

He will return to New York ahead of their Wednesday MLS match against Toronto FC.

Ghana coach Avram Grant faced roster issues, including injury and visa problems with several players, making way for Sam’s inclusion. He joins NYCFC’s Kwadwo Poku in the surprise call-up.

Sam has been an invaluable player for the Red Bulls over the past two seasons. This year alone, he has doubled his previous MLS career high in goals (10) and added six assists.

Sam has previously appeared on the international stage at the Under-20 level for England.
