Former New York City FC assistant coach C.J. Brown has been hired by Premier League of America expansion side Aurora Borealis Soccer Club, the club announced.

It will be Brown’s first head coaching assignment, leading Aurora Borealis’ inaugural run in the PLA. Brown served as an assistant to former NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis during their 2015 inaugural season before being dismissed by the club.

Brown has been coaching since 2011, spending his first three years with Kreis at Real Salt Lake. He spent the 2014 season as an assistant coach with the Chicago Fire. He had been linked to a head coaching job with the Fire this offseason but was reportedly a fringe option for the franchise at best.

Nevertheless, Brown will be returning to the Chicago area after spending his entire MLS career with the Fire from 1998-2010.

The Aurora-based club will begin play this summer in the fifth tier of the US soccer pyramid.
