Red Bulls’ Tim Cahill called up for Australia friendlies

Club or Country?

That will be the question as New York Red Bulls’ leader Tim Cahill has once again been called into Australia’s National Team for a series of friendlies this October.

Australia will face the UAE on October 10th at the Mohamed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, UAE.  From there, it is a match against Qatar on the 14th at the Lekhwiya Stadiumin Doha.

Even at 34-years-old, Cahill has enjoyed perhaps his best season internationally, leading his country in goals during their brief World Cup jaunt and scoring ten in 16 international matches overall.  He joins fellow Socceroo veterans Mark Bresciano and captain Mile Jedinak leading a young Australian side.

The Red Bulls are in the middle of a vital run towards the playoffs.  If Cahill chooses to join the Socceroos, he would be unavailable for a clash against Toronto FC at Red Bull Arena on October 11th.  While only a series of friendlies, Australia is preparing to host the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, further increasing the need for the national team to include Cahill in their plans for their final row of friendlies.

Back on the club scene, Cahill has struggled to find his place on a revived Red Bull side, spending much of the year with Australia.  It is a consideration Australian coach Ange Postecoglou has taken into account.

“We were mindful that the matches coincide with the first weekend of the A-League and we tried to not be too disruptive but ultimately this is our National team and everyone agrees this is the highest honour in the game and we will always pick players deserving of that honour,” he said.

Whether Cahill decides to take the call has yet to be determined.
