Report: Cosmos closing in on MLS vet, Canadian international Attakora

Are the New York Cosmos set to address their razor-thin depth on defense?

According to a report from Red Nation Online, the Cosmos are “close to signing” Canadian defender and MLS lifer, Nana Attakora.

Attakora, 25, has featured for Toronto FC, the San Jose Earthquakes, Haka out of Finland and most recently, DC United. Since 2008, the North York native has amassed eight National Team appearances with Canada. He enjoyed his greatest success with Toronto, managing 56 appearances over four seasons with the club.

If signed, the 6’1 centerback has good odds of breaking into the first team simply based on numbers. The current Cosmos defensive ranks boast all of five defenders; Hunter Freeman, Carlos Mendes, Ayoze, Hunter Gorskie and Roversio. Attakora would be the fourth centerback added to the bunch. However, with age and health a concern for both Mendes and Roversio, Attakora can earn significant playing time behind the duo. Even at full health, head coach Giovanni Savarese has shown a deference for rotational changes in his starting XI that would surely include Attakora seeing some playing time.

According to the report, several other NASL sides were vying for Attakora’s signature, but the Cosmos managed to beat them out.

EOS was unable to confirm the details of Attakora’s signing at the time of this report.
