Tim Cahill captains Australia towards Asian Cup knockout rounds, Oyongo in Cameroon plans

A good week just keeps getting better for New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill.

After igniting Australia to a four goal romp over Kuwait and then captaining his side to another four goal demolition of Oman, Australia has moved on to the knockout round of this year’s Asian Cup.  They await the runner-up of Group B, which will be decided when Saudi Arabia take on Uzbekistan on the 18th.

Cahill managed the crucial opener against Kuwait and has since watched on as the Socceroos’ young guns produced seven goals of their own.  An injury to captain Mile Jedinak allowed Australian boss Ange Postecoglou the opportunity to put the armband on Cahill for the Oman encounter.  Jedinak is questionable for Saturday’s match against South Korea, leaving the possibility open of a repeat captainship for the Red Bulls’ Designated Player.

Australia, the tournament hosts, lead all teams with eight goals through two matches.

Meanwhile, Cameroon are putting the finishing touches on their friendly matches ahead of the African Cup of Nations. Ambroise Oyongo Bitolo has been a fixture for the Indomitable Lions, lining up as a right back under coach Volker Finke. Their latest result, a 1-1 draw against Gabonese club side FC Mounana, leads Cameroon into the tournament where the Red Bulls’ standout defender is set to play a major role.

Cameroon open the tournament on January 20th against Mali. They then face Guinea on the 24th and Ivory Coast on the 28th. The knockout rounds begin January 31st, with the championship match scheduled for February 8th in Bata, Equatorial Guinea.
