Venue Change: New York Cosmos to host Express in U.S. Open Cup

Belson Stadium

No matter who won last night’s U.S. Open Cup clash between Jersey Express and the New York Red Bulls II, the New York Cosmos were guaranteed to host the winners.

Late last night, a Cosmos official revealed New York would host PDL side Jersey Express at St. John’s Belson Stadium. Originally, the Cosmos would have had to travel to NJIT if the Express won, but venue availability concerns shifted the location to Belson — no matter who won the match.

For the Cosmos, this will be the second time they host a lower-league club in Open Cup competition on St. John’s campus. Last year, New York hosted the Brooklyn Italians at Belson, taking a commanding 2-0 victory in front of nearly 2,000 fans en route to a fourth round encounter against the New York Red Bulls. Jersey Express do not have the name recognition of the Red Bulls reserves or Brooklyn Italians for that matter, but they showed well against Red Bulls II at NJIT.

Like last year, the fourth round brings with it MLS competition, pitting the Cosmos or Express with first division competition. Traditionally, fourth round opponents are cast with regional rivals, meaning that either the Cosmos or Express will likely face the New York Red Bulls or New York City FC when they advance.

The Cosmos host Jersey Express at Belson this Wednesday, May 27th.
