Charleston Battery Gain New Ownership in B Sports Entertainment

Blackbaud Stadium: Home of the Charleston Battery

One of the longest running ownership groups in modern US Soccer history has come to an end as Tony Bakker and investors have sold the Charleston Battery to B Sports Entertainment.

“We have an amazing, innovative new ownership group that is 100 percent committed to continuing the Battery’s incredible legacy while continuing to grow the its ties to the community,” said team president Andrew Bell. “They are going to be immediately investing heavily in the infrastructure here at the stadium, which will allow us to accelerate our growth.”

The effect of the new ownership can be seen immediately as BSE began investment in MUSC Health Stadium. A new electronic message board went live last week and upgrades to the audio and digital standards of the stadium should also be improved by the start of the season. Wi-fi should become available, however it is unclear whether it will be available to fans or just to those who work in the stadium.

The new ownership is familiar with the team and area as they are a privately held company from the Charleston area.

Charleston Battery are one of the longest running soccer teams in the United States, having started in 1992 before the modern soccer pyramid as we know it. Over that time, they’ve won four lower division championships including in the USL-A League, USL Second Division and USL Pro. The Battery were also runner-up in the 2008 US Open Cup and Semi-finalists in 1999 and 2004. Last season, the team finished third in the new USL and were eliminated in the Conference Semifinal.

Their season starts on March 26th at home against the newest USL team Cincinnati FC.
