New York Red Bull II Clinches Playoff Spot in First Season

After a loss to FC Montreal on Wednesday, New York Red Bull II needed a bit of assistance from the opposition to secure their playoff position.

And they got it.

The team needed both Harrisburg City and Pittsburgh to drop points in their remaining games and that’s just what happened on Saturday night. Both the Islanders and Riverhounds drew in their respective games, guaranteeing New York a spot in the USL playoffs.

Thanks to a new team philosophy and extensive immersion with the first team, New York Red Bull’s foray into the USL has been incredibly successful. Aside from learning just how impressive their lauded academy system can be in real games, the team also showed interest in winning with USL signings like Stefano Bonomo and Devon “Speedy” Williams. That effort led the team to a 12-9-6 record with one game left to play.

Currently NYRB II is the only MLS reserve side to make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference and one of two currently in the playoffs for the entire USL. Montreal and Toronto both had abysmal seasons despite showing impressive young talent within their midst.

Currently, New York sits in fourth place in the USL standings. A win over the Rochester Rhinos combined with a loss or draw by the Charleston Battery could see New York leapfrog into third place, giving them a home match in the first round of the USL playoffs.
