New York City FC sign Colombian defender Jefferson Mena

Jefferson Mena NYCFC

BRONX, N.Y. – New York City FC were looking for defensive depth, and on Tuesday afternoon, they found some.

NYCFC have signed 26-year-old Colombian defender Jefferson Mena on a transfer from Colombian team Independiente Medellin, pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate, a P1 Visa and a physical. Mena has made 81 appearances for Medellin since joining the club in 2011, helping his side to a runner-up finish in the 2014 Primera A Clausura.

“Jefferson is a player I have been watching for a while and I couldn’t be happier to add him to our squad,” NYCFC head coach Jason Kreis said in a club statement. “His athletic ability and speed will provide us with a strong new option in the center back position. He’s a good technical player just about to hit the prime of his career and will add international quality and experience to the team.”

Mena added, “I’m very excited to join an ambitious club like New York City FC and to work with a very strong squad. I look forward to meeting my new teammates and learning from the coaching staff while exploring my new home in the great city of New York. I am particularly excited about playing in front of New York City FC Fans, who I hear create a great atmosphere for the team at Yankee Stadium.”

In order to find space for Mena on their squad, NYCFC traded allocation money for an international roster slot in 2015 and 2016 from the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Mena will immediately bolster NYCFC’s floundering centerback corps., and also gives Kreis a player with the flexibility to play right back in a pinch.

I will do everything in my power to see to it that NYCFC makes it to the playoffs.

well they should be improving hopefully with the addition of so many players (it seems to be up to about 10 by now?), hopefully some of them payoff eventually – it seems like a whole new team now with Pirlo and eventually Limpard also on the way…

THERE IS ONLY A SALARY CAP WHEN IO SAY THERE IS!

  • Rip73

Well by the law of averages…..they ought to have brought in at least one player who can play defense by now.

  • CosmosPetke

    Totally needed that

Can’t wait for take 3 of the Hudson battle.
Nycfc is going to look so different and red bull might get embarrassed in their beautiful New Jersey red bull arena.
If I was red bull I would sign reinforcements, like DPs knock knock.
Drogba wouldn’t be bad or johansson.

Hopefully fat Frank will be ready by then. Or maybe him and Pirlo will be drafted in by Man City to sit on their bench.

      • Realist

I know you’re a big red bull fan, but don’t you think it’s a bad deal of just giving NYC 500 tickets?
How many fans will invade jersey now and painted blue and start fights outside and inside bars.
By reducing the amount of tickets, it just made the game more dangerous. It happens all over the world, it’s soccer.
        How about add more security?
No fans behave or are innocent, this just made it worse.

…and maybe you won’t get kicked out of your rented space as well.

I’m just focused on hanging our world renowned ‘third rail’ sign right side up this time. I got emotional last time.
My bad. It’s just so exciting finally having a league in the U.S. I mean I’ve been waiting forever. But I think I finally know everything now. I’m a soccer expert ! God I love Brooklyn!

Can’t wait for Yankee stadium to start opening the 300 level on a regular basis due to demand. Amazed not happening already. Maybe next year.

    • Johnny Feelgood

It’s AMAZING ! There’s nothing like soccer on a tennis court size field in a baseball stadium. Thank God for NYCFC!

      • Larry’s A Simpleton

Yeah but its AMAZING what the atmosphere is like in that baseball stadium with 28000 regularly attending. unlike that ghost town out there in nassau county or that half empty red bull arena night after night. 18000 per game, my fat blacjass.

        Thank God for NYCFC

  • Johnny Feelgood

It is !!!! I can only imagine what it sounds like on TV!
I heard it’s incredible !! So hip, so real! So organic !
So light blue! Soccer started here!!!!

Mena, welcome to the Bronx. It was obvious from that last game that we are desperate for a centerback. Credit to the new guy Iraola who was covering his own area and trying his best to help at centerback in the second half. Now let’s move up the table. I love being at Yankee Stadium for the games. The atmosphere is exciting and everyone enjoys themselves. The word will spread.
