New York City FC is continuing to court Standard Leige defender Jorge Teixiera, Voetballprimeur reports.

Teixeira was first linked to conversations with NYCFC by EoS last month.

Although Teixiera is considered a part of the team’s core and has publicly said he is happy with the Belgian club, Leige are prepared to look for a replacement in light of foreign interest.

“I feel good here in Liège, but I said to my agent and see if there are teams interested,” Teixiera said.

NYCFC and Brazilian club Flamengo are said to be interested in signing the 29-year-old Portuguese defender. The right-footed centerback would help address NYCFC’s defensive woes, particularly after losing backline leader Shay Facey upon the expiration of his Manchester City loan deal. Currenlty, the club counts Jefferson Mena, Jason Hernandez and Ethan White as their only natural centerback options. Chris Wingert will likely continue his transition from the left fullback position to centerback in the coming year as well.

The club has yet to use any of the allocation money it received at the end of last season nor has it used its Targeted Allocation Money.
