Patrick Vieira began his European tour this week with a visit to Manchester City and their new head coach Pep Guardiola.

Vieira is back in Manchester where he began his coaching career with the Elite Development Squad. He said he has been planning to return to Manchester once New York City FC’s season ended. This week, he gets to reconnect with Guardiola, an old friend, and some of his former players still at the club.

“I’m going to Manchester to spend the week over there to spend some time with the first-team to see how they work,” Vieira said to NYCFC.com. “To be learning next to Pep Guardiola at City Football Academy — talking with the guys from the City Football Group, to the scouting department — this is how we start to prepare for next season.

“I’ve had a chance to meet Pep before — I believe he’s one of the best, if not the best.”

Vieira plans to spend parts of the offseason in Europe touching base with old connections from his career in Europe. He said he plans to make stops at clubs in France and Italy to continue his coaching education. But the trip to Manchester also allows him to connect with old friends Vincent Kompany and Pablo Zabaleta.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing some old faces — I haven’t had the chance to go back since I moved to New York but I’m still in touch with Vincent once or twice every week — we are really close friends still. Seeing the likes of Zabaleta, seeing some of the players who I had a chance to play with over there, as well as the people who work at the football club in the administration department, will be really good as well.”
