New York Cosmos Sporting Director and Head Coach Giovanni Savarese pulled the curtain back on a pair of transfer rumors, acknowledging contact with both defender Samuel Caceres of the Argentine B-league and Chilean playmaker Jaime Valdes of Colo Colo.

“On the point of Caceres, this is something that is in the works. We have been speaking with him,” Savarese said. “As well as Valdes, he’s a player that has been talked about and we feel that we are deciding and looking at the situation there.”

The signature for Caceres is close. Sources tell us New York have all but sealed his services after extensive talks with Nueva Chicago over a possible loan or buyout of the player. Caceres, 25, is a centerback who has played in both the Argentine Primera with Independiente and Nueva Chicago in La B. At 6’3″, the young defender offers New York a possible long-term solution at the heart of their backline, and a much needed infusion of youth on defense.

Meanwhile, discussions continue with Valdes. The 34-year-old made news earlier this winter, claiming an outrageous monetary offer from the Cosmos had him contemplating a future with New York. Valdes is under contract with longtime club, Colo Colo, but the Chilean was said to be enticed by the offer just enough to take leave. New York offered a reported whopping $800k salary to acquire Valdes; a number that was quickly denied by a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

Valdes was named the Chilean Player of the League for 2014 and helped Colo Colo to a championship in the same year.

Sources tell EOS negotiations will likely drag on until the summer, with the Cosmos and Colo Colo still far apart on acquisition terms.
