Cosmos Copa group stage set

Cosmos Copa 2013

After 28 teams entered the fray this weekend in hopes of qualifying for the Cosmos Copa, eight have advanced to the tournament.

With a full field of competitors New York’s most celebrated annual amateur soccer event is now set to begin July 13th on the fields of Manhattan’s Pier 40.

Argentina, Croatia, France, El Salvador, Gambia, Italy, Ivory Coast and Uruguay advanced to the tournament, facing last year’s seven quarter-finalists – Bolivia, Colombia, Greece, Jamaica, Poland, Senegal, USA and the returning champion, Haiti.

The 16 participating clubs were drawn into groups of four as follows:

Group A: NYC Haiti, NYC Greece, NYC Argentina, NYC Gambia

Group B: NYC Poland, NYC USA, NYC Ivory Coast, NYC Uruguay

Group C: NYC Senegal, NYC Jamaica, NYC Croatia, NYC France

Group D: NYC Bolivia, NYC Colombia, NYC El Salvador, NYC Italy

NYC Poland is a two time winner of the Copa, and last year’s runner-up. Haiti, the darlings of the 2012 run, return to defend their title in a difficult group with Argentina, Greece and Gambia.

Group stage play will run from the 13th-14th at Pier 40 and Randall’s Island respectively. The full schedule of fixtures will be announced shortly.
