Cosmos Fall to Edmonton 2-1, Drop out of Overall Spot

by JAKE NUTTING

The first Raul-free round of action for the New York Cosmos this year did not go to plan, as a spurt of two first half goals from Edmonton was enough to deliver the Cosmos their second straight loss.

It’s the first time this season that New York has dropped back to back matches.

Raul was not the only regular starter to take a rest on Sunday. Captain Carlos Mendes, Keeper Jimmy Maurer and left back Ayoze were all left out of the starting lineup. Danny Szetela and Hagop Chirishian also got their first starting nods in a long while at midfield.

The first half of action played out the way many have gone for the Cosmos in recent weeks. Constant pressure in all areas of the field and some positive runs from Lucky Mkosana amounted to nothing on the scoresheet, and only a few half chances.

The Eddies were more proficient when it came to creating serious scoring opportunities. Centerback Samuel Caceres made a vital interruption to force a shot wide in the 10th minute when Lance Laing found some space for himself in the penalty area.

Forward Daryl Fordyce seemed to have a guaranteed goal a few minutes later when he rose to meet an impeccable cross from Pablo Cruz. Fordyce directed the header toward the top corner, but Kyle Zobeck flew through the air to parry it away.

The consternation continued for the Cosmos attack for the rest of the half. The best chance that the visitors could produce came when the Eddies back line fumbled the ball at the top of their box and Sebastian Guenzatti ran on to one-time a shot right at keeper Matt Van Oekel. Apart from the miscue, Edmonton’s defense was rock solid and shut down any encroachment on their end.

Edmonton grabbed their first goal of the afternoon with a bit of luck in the 41st minute. Lance Laing attempted a pass out to the left wing for Dustin Corea, but the ball deflected off the back leg of Jimmy Mulligan and fell back to Laing. The winger found himself with an open run into the box and made no doubt about his finish past Zobeck.

The Cosmos deficit doubled only two minutes later when the back line experienced a serious breakdown. A quick break for the Eddies allowed Corea to cut inside to find Fordyce with yards of space between him and any defenders. Caceres raised his hand for offside, but the forward was clearly onside and used the space to run on goal and beat the keeper who had brilliantly denied him earlier in the half.

The Cosmos finally caught a break in the 57th minute after a poor pass back from Edmonton’s Allan Zebie blew by Van Oekel and out for a corner. Van Oekel failed to get a decent punch on the ensuing corner and the ball spilled out to the far post to Szetela, who attempted to play the ball back across net but was denied by the flailing arm of Albert Watson. The referee whistled for the handball and Marcos Senna stutter stepped his way to a penalty conversion to cut the lead to one.

Riding a strong rush of momentum, the Cosmos nearly equalized a few minutes after the penalty. Mkosana dribbled through some traffic on the endline and delivered a teasing roller across the face of goal that nearly found a teammate, but Zebie slid in to break the play up at the last second.

The chances dried up once again for the Cosmos after the brief swell of positivity. The penetrative runs into the box stopped and the club was forced to settle for long distance efforts. Senna came close to equalizing in the 81st minute when his free kick from 30 yards out slipped through Van Oekel’s arms and took a deflection off the back of his leg. The keeper was able to recover in time, though, and keep his side ahead.

Van Oekel was asked again to come up big again in the 86th minute when second half substitute Andres Flores fired off a shot from 20 yards. The keeper had a much easier time handling Flores’ attempt.

While pushing for the second goal in the dying moments the Cosmos came close to conceding another, but Szetela was able to clear the ball off the line when Ritchie Jones thought he had an open look on goal in the 88th minute.

With the loss, the Cosmos suddenly find themselves third in the combined standings after holding total control of the top spot since early in the Spring Season. Ottawa is two points clear of New York, while Minnesota is even on points but ahead on goal differential.

The Cosmos will now head home to match up with the mid-table Atlanta Silverbacks for another Sunday match.

I don’t understand y Gio didn’t play more of the starters. We are in the race for the top spot,y not go get it.Why put the 2nd team in. Granted we seem.deep but this group playing tonight don’t play enough together to look comfortable. I love Giovanni but this one is on him

  • smurf040

I’am caught in the middle. granted, all the missing starters needed some rest. But like Kevin said, We needed points for the overall standings! Smh! Don’t know what to think!

  • Kevin, Erik Stover addressed this at the 5 points/Borough Boys Q&A yesterday. Key players needed a rest. The trip to Edomonton is tough and the turf ain’t easy either in Edmonton. In fact, the team has off today and tomorrow, it’s a rest for the final stretch run.

Not saying I disagree with you, but that was the thinking.

  • William

Gio would have been quite happy with a draw yesterday as they will look to revv it up for the last 4 games rolling into the playoffs. I wouldn’t overreact to yesterday loss Gio is looking big pix so there is enuff in the tank for the playoffs. Sunday is a must win. And I have seen enuff of Caceres. 2nd goal was on him just look at Mulligans face and the words how can u let that happen ?

  • William

Roversio was suppose to play yesterday that would have sure up that backline which has been shredded last 2 games. We will see Ayoze, Freeman, Roversio and Mendes back together vs Atlanta.

  • Kevin

I think you’re right about Caceres, he seems a bit over matched. And I know there’s a big picture, I just don’t like seeing so many players out. Makes the play on the field so disjointed

    • William

yes they looked slow unsure with no flow in first half somewhat better in the second half but the most effective stretch for the Cosmos this year was the combo of Moffat, Raul playmaking and Flores and Fernandes and Lucky striking. Roversio is the key for them winning it all. He gives the stability to the backline which would allow Ayoze and Freeman to overlap and play balls into Lucky, Raul and Leo. Sorry to say but it seems when Senna is in there things seems to bog down and become stagnate.

  • John

Went to ESPN3 to watch a little of the game and I was shocked that it looked like a high school game. The stadium was really a glorified high school stadium with minimal people in the stands.

That is not a product that you can sell to a major broadcaster its pure minor league at best.

    • William

hey John Boy why don’t u blow it out yer ass so it hits your mutha in her ugly face !

      • John

Hey I am only telling you what I see, if you can’t have an adult conversation it’s not my problem.

The product looks like high school sports deal with it.

        • William

I don’t have to deal with anything stay clear of me

  • William

    adult conversation u effin QUEEN

    • John

UHHHH an internet tough guy. Keyboard warrior.

The product looks like high school sports deal with it.

      • William

just countering u u need to be countered and will be at every turn tough guy

  • William

    John BOY

  • William

3 brain cells and still cant make a coherent thought huh John BOY

  • William

hey John U little coward why don’t u email Bill Peterson or Erik Stover what your said – if u had a set you would instead of trolling like some 10 y/o little girl. John Boy is the gotcha guy u know I hate GOTCHA guys. Effin puke

    • slowleftarm

Why would it take a set to email Peterson or Stover and tell them Cosmos are minor league? They already know it.

Plus what’s the deal with this playoff format. Cosmos are “champions” of a ten game spring season and now can coast and play reserve squads for the remaining two-thirds of the season? People criticize MLS for having too many teams in the playoffs, and I totally agree. But it’s still a better format than NASL.

      • William

who knows it ? u ? u are a nobody accept the fact so u can embrace your destiny slow one.

      • William

what happened to the Harrison Metrostars ? pathetic display

        • slowleftarm

Yes a sorry display against Orlando no question but it still would have been plenty good enough to win against Cosmos. Plus RBNY are still in first in the East.

          • William

sorry display hahahahaahahahahahah fanboy description that was embarrassing guy – Cosmos would have ripped them to shreds like they did 6/14/14. Memba ? maybe u should go rewatch that game u since to have a very very short term memory.

  • I’m not sure that Gio would have been satisfied with a draw yesterday. We needed to win to continue to have the season entirely in our hands. WE don’t play ottawa anymore this season, so now Ottawa’s got two points on us with no games in hand.

The way things are shaping up, instead of a semifinal in Brooklyn against Edmonton/TB or FL and a final in Brooklyn, it could wind up a semifinal against minnesota and a final in Ottawa. That starts to look a lot tougher.

    • William

I agree with your potential playoff game scenario but there are 4 games to go and it would be hard for me to believe Ottawa can continue to win and run the table.

  • I think Gio thought we had a strong enough squad to go and win without a few guys, but it didn’t work out.

    • William

hard to say as the Eddies were and are trending up.

  • Factoid boy

Leo, I love your dedication and enthusiasm, but Cosmos suck. I wish they were better, but they are quickly losing relevance in the NY/NJ soccer scene and I see no light at the end of the tunnel. NASL will have to become the minor league of MLS or ultimately fold.As lame as the MLS may be, it is trending in an upward trajectory whereas NASL is simply dying on the vine. I wish it was different but sadly its not. Morituri te salutamus

    • William

facts to backup this long sweeping assessment by an internet genius ????

      • John

attendance 4K , no press coverage, no TV coverage , No radio coverage , play in a college stadium with lacrosse lines all over, Hofstra wants them out ASAP.

Does any one in New York even know that the cosmos exist?

        do you want more reasons?

        • William

so whats your interest in the Cosmos why the absolute hatred whats your stake in this ? John Boy ? what are u part of a community group in Elmont why all this hatred and spewing of doomsday what are u just a fuckin prick ? if you are then that’s fine whats your deal ? cmon honesty is the best policy especially on the internet right ?

          • John

no hatred just stating facts as they are.

        • William

who’s your team Mr. Soccer ?

          • slowleftarm

William you need to calm down and realize there is more to life than Hempstead Cosmos.

            • William

Slow u need to root for a real team not the Harrison Metrostars

what living in mommy’s basement still ?

  • slowleftarm

William is officially off his meds. Someone get him medical help ASAP.

    • William

what happened to the great METROSTARS SLOW HUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • William

slow what about 5-3 280 pounds eating 3 day old spaghetti hahahaahahahahahaha pathetic loser fanboy

    • slowleftarm

Huh – you talking about Leo Glickman?

      • William

        NAH talking about u moron

      • William

go back to Harrison and go home to your dumpster fruitcup

  • William

hahahaahhaaha slow =====’s really fuckin slow

  • slowleftarm

    Wow

    • William

      eh stupid ?

  • slowleftarm

Looks like “William” is really Leo spamming Cosmos articles so that he can brag about how Cosmos articles get the most posts on this site.

    • William

please get lost u loser !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Factoid boy

William….being angry is not going to help your inevitable dilemma. Failure is part of the evolutionary process, hence the bleak hope that you will evolve from your neanderthal-like state.Mocking what you simply cannot understand in your fragile, delusional world is sadly predictable. Quite similar to the prediction of the Cosmos ultimate extinction. They too will have to evolve, like you, or simply fade away.Godspeed my simpleton friend…may you and the Cosmos go hand in hand to that big soccer stadium in the sky.

  • As you can plainly see Factoid Boy, you, John, and especially jealous **** ant slowleftarm have come onto a cosmos comments section to troll. And William is reacting to you, and quite effectively I might add.

Your “dying on the vine” comment is wrong. The NASL is attracting investors, is going after MLS’s monopoly agreement with USSF on Division 1 status, and the Cosmos are going hard on stadium development. Though the Cosmos attendance is poor, attendance league wide, even with our poor performance, is going up.

As for “relevance”, I’ll say to you what I said to Larry Simpleton. You can have Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, I’ll take the far less “relevant” Sleater-Kinney 10 days out of 10. I’m interested in great soccer, and the Cosmos provide that, like it or not. As a fan, the rest of it I couldn’t care less about.

    • William

      Thank you Leo I appreciate.

  • Al yubranick

I don’t have a dog in this fight but Geeze Sleater-Kinney is beyond lame. If that’s your choice in music you have issues beyond minor league soccer.

    • your double post modern anti-hipster hipsterism is not welcomed here.

      • Lou Lozito

Leo what are you going to do when the Cosmos are extinct? Get naked and rub up against Onionsack?
Watch beta or vhs tapes of 77,78 games? I feel sorry for you. I do.

        • Actually Lou, I have many interests in my life. In fact, in some ways, it would be a relief not to have plan things around watching soccer games. So don’t feel sorry for me. Feel sorry for yourself, who feels a need to come on to a FC Edmonton v. NY Cosmos comments section discussion even though you don’t like the Cosmos because you have nothing better to do.

        • William

what are u going to do Lou finally get a job and finally get off the govt cheese ?

    • Faline

He only likes sleater kinney because he loves portlandia. …..admit it Leo

      • I have never ever seen Portlandia because I don’t watch TV. On the other hand, I am old enough to have seen Sleater-Kinney live in the late 90s. Dumbass.

        • I don’t watch tv excpet soccer games, of course.

    • William

      BLACKBERRY SMOKE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ur wrong,I’m not trolling. I really wish Cosmos were the dominant force in our soccer world but they’re not,and they’re failing. I just call it like I see it.

    • William

sports is very fluid and very subjective and actually the NASL is just getting started the MLS has been going since 1996 to compare the two is foolish.

  • Kevin

wow at last check my comment was how I don’t want to see all the backups in the game, this forum took a wrong turn QUICKLY!

    • William

because we cant just talk about whats going on on the field we have to address all these side issues and negativity and doomsday predictions on the NASL. Hey Slow, John Boy, Factoid Boy and that simple ******* the COSMOS aren’t going anywhere they are just getting started and deal with that !

  • Rick bulwicz

That reminds me of the movie ‘Wrong Turn’. Talk about twisted. I remember flipping around one night trying to find a movie to pleasure myself to when I stumbled across that movie on USA. Definitely a mood killer.

  • REAL OpenCupFans know nasl teams are bad

“the cosmos provide great soccer” – when in 1978?

come on now, the team’s best players are MLS retirees/rejects and they play in a minor league that can’t beat USL teams?…

is anyone out there saying the Trenton THunder provide great baseball, above and beyond the MEts and Yankees???…

    • This from a “fan” of a team whose best player, Bradley Wright Phillips, was a journeyman on a mid table league 1 team and has proceeded to dominate MLS. MLS fans are hardly in a position to criticize the level of play of other leagues.

      • slowleftarm

BWP isn’t RBNY’s best player – I’d rate Dax, Sacha, Sam and probably Lawrence and Miazga above him. Last year he benefited big-time from Henry. Henry even made Luke Rodgers look decent. To be honest, he should’ve scored 40 goals, not just 27.

He’s scored only 14 this year. I wish he was dominating MLS but he isn’t. Also, he moved from the Championship, not League One. But I guess when your team plays minor league soccer in front of 4k at a lacrosse stadium, you have to stretch the truth to argue that they’re relevant. MLS fans are certainly in position to criticize a team and a league made up mostly of MLS rejects – i.e. players not good enough to play in MLS.

        • William

that’s all bullshit slow one what about the Harrson Metrostarts in the playoffs wanna to talk about that ????? no never right ? cmon u are always quiet about that why ? don’t hide on me now

          • BWP has more than doubled his strike rate in MLS over League one. Which frankly I don’t care about, but you guys seem to care so much about the perception of the quality of play of the Cosmos, when Red Bull is a team that has never won a championship in the 30th best league in the world.

Again, I don’t make fun ofpeople who like a team that’s not the best in the world, in fact I find it commendable. But if you’re obsessed with the quality of other leagues, clearly being a fan of a non-achieving MLS team is not for you.

            • slowleftarm

His last season in League one BWP had 22 goals in 42 games. And that was without Henry playing alongside him. This year he has 14 in 26 which is pretty comparable. And again, that’s as the lone striker for one of the highest scoring teams in the league.

He didn’t even need to get off the bench for the 4-1 thrashing of Hempstead at RBA this season.

MLS might be the 30th best league in the world though I think it’s probably higher. That’s irrelevant. It’s far better than NASL which is what the Comsos fanboys deny.

            • Factoid boy

RB sucks as well brother. Ive been harping all year that they are a good team in a crap league/division. all these guys want to argue that somehow MLS is top shelf and on the rise….no way. But for the magic of a Giovinco,Keane and the like ,there is little to watch….ever.

  • Kevin

Real Open Cup Fan where were you the year before about your USL stats. Its funny I don’t remember you back then. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the NASL having a winning record against USL or doing well enough against MLS. I know the NASL is the second division but at least don’t give me stats from one year and then not give me them from the next because it doest’t defend your reasoning.

    • William

Please plastic team fans or Harrison Metrostars fans explain how the Cosmos beat each team in consecutive years in the US Open Cup ?

now be careful I am setting a trap for you fanboys cmon take the bait ?

  • REAL OpenCupFans know nasl teams are bad

agree with slow left on BWP details,

and Leo — I agree with you that MLS is not as high of a level as top BPL/big 4 euro league teams — that’s b/c I am realistic and I am still an MLS fan b/c its the best we’ve got in the country and getting better each year. If you are saying that MLS is a lower level than how bad is the nasl?

You and your people are the ones who are not realistic, trying to say that nasl is as good as MLS when they can’t even beat USL teams last year (so maybe they beat some the year before – who cares, they should). nasl teams can’t hold a candle to MLS teams, look at the flagship cos-shmos — best players are MLS retirees/rejects and the soccer is not “great” or they would have more fans at games then- get back to reality people.

    • William

COSMOS beat the Harrison Metrostars and Plastic team Blue on consecutive years. Just as you keep posting the same posts over and over I will do the same.

      • slowleftarm

They beat a RBNY reserve team back when the team didn’t care at all about the Open Cup. How long are you going to brag about that as if it’s relevant to something. RBNY took the Cup seriously this year and look at the results when Hempstead came to RBA.

  • It’s funny Real, when NASL teams beat MLS teams in the US open cup which has been often in past years, no one says that NASL is better than MLS.

Regardless, yes, I would say MLS is at about League 2 in England level, and NASL is at Conference level. Yet, you don’t suspect you would hear yeovil fans giving **** to Torquay supporters about their level of football. That’s what’s so fucking lame about you franchise fans. You come on to the comments section of an article about the edmonton cosmos game and interrupt 3 cosmos fans to tell them how crap NASL is, etc. Stupid.

    • William

sure like whats the end game – bunch of 12 y/o’s. I would rather talk about the way team is playing rather than the overarching issues of the state of NASL , MLS and USL. Are there any future commissioners on this board, board of directors or any future owners on this board ?

    • slowleftarm

Leo have you ever been to, or even watched, a League Two game? I didn’t think so. MLS is a much higher level than that. What are you talking about?

      • William

this past w/e I watched a lot of MLS and wasn’t really that impressed with the level u purport that it is.

      • Keep fooling yourself.

        • slowleftarm

So you’ve never ever seen a League Two game in your life but you know it’s the same level as MLS? I lived in England for several years and frequently went to watch Barnet because they were relatively close by. They were in League Two and RBNY and most MLS teams are a clear level or two above them.

  • William

the attendance – I am at every Cosmos game – the attendance has varied from 12,000 to 3,100. Ok great who cares not my problem is Erik Stover’s issue and the owners. I just support the team.

    • John

only time the cosmos got 12k is when they played NYCFC otherwise it’s 2,500 to 4,500. Attendance might not be a problem for you but teams can’t survive on 4,000 attendance with very other outside revenue, Cosmos get no money from local TV and radio, they have no national TV contract in which to get generate revenues. Merchandise sales are very small , partnership revenue is minimal so as you can see how is a team supposed to survive if it can’t make money.

And the cosmos as the premier team of the NASL so if this is the story for the cosmos it is much of the same for the rest of the NASL teams and most of those owners don’t have the deep pockets of the Arab owned cosmos.

      • William

your complete post is untrue John Boy spreading lies to suit each one of your points HOW SELF SERVING !!!! and ARROGANT !

        • John

So like I thought you can not dispute the facts.

Minor leagues team fail in NY that is why the Cosmos are failing.

                  • William

I dispute them all I am not going point by point. I dispute them all most of all the attendance figures. I am not playing your little moronic games you will play my game.

                  • slowleftarm

Look John – how can he dispute what you’ve said when it’s true? All he can do it name call and post nonsense, which he does all the time anyway.

      • yeah, uh, no. http://www.nycosmos.com/match-center/894/nyc-vs-tbr

But again, why do these people feel so threatened by us, if they say we’re irrelevant.

        • William

exactly – when the Cosmos clinched the spring season vs the Armada in June they were 7,600. etc etc

          • slowleftarm

Wow 7,600 for a clinching game – i.e. less than RBNY drew for a cup game on a Tuesday at 4pm. LOL.

            • Far more than the Metrostars were getting for playoff games 6 years into the league.

            • William

u keep getting wrong SLOW u are the Harrison Metrostars and when are they going to win it all ? like when ???? based on last w/e’s performance not anytime soon. Guy u need to really concentrate on that mess in NJ. First of all is the identity crisis. NY Metrostars, NJ Metrostars, the soft drink name , Harrison Stars hahahahahahaaha who in the hell are u ? please enlighten all of us we are waiting.

  • William

hey John Boy if u want me to go game by game with u just say the word Mr Soccer.

  • William

John u sound very prejudice “Arab owned Cosmos” or should I say a racialist –

    • Factoid boy

This is the best post ever….and you wonder why this country is going to hell in a handbasket!!

      • William

really thanks so much. Just playing the game guy relax with the judgements. anyhow what are u doing on this board anyways ? u aren’t a NASL fan nor a MLS fan. Another basement dweller.

    • John

      Are they not Arab owned?
same for many teams around the world.

The good thing for the cosmos is that their ownership will be able to absorb the losses for the foreseeable future something the rest of the NASL owners can’t.

      • William

who cares ? irrelevant !!!! u said it that they have arab owners I didn’t why did you say it there was a motive behind it why don’t u come clean instead of eating around the edges ? have some balls !!!! I haven’t heard one single thing from you that had any substance or substantion. You just keep slinging mud no one care what you say or think JOHN BOY.

        • John

Still waiting for you to answer these questions — This is you cosmos reality that you deal with.

When I see the Cosmos I go out of my head,
I just can’t get enough, and I just can’t get enough.
