The New York Cosmos announced on Thursday the signing of forward and Costa Rican international Jairo Arrieta for the 2016 season. The addition signals a move to address some of the attacking losses the Cosmos have suffered this offseason.

“Jairo comes to us with great experience and is a goal-scoring threat,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese. “His addition to the team builds on an already strong core of players returning for the upcoming season.

Arreita, 32, arrives in New York after spending 2015 with D.C. United in MLS, where he tallied five goals in 27 appearances during the club’s run to the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs. His career began in his home country of Costa Rica with Brujas FC in 2003.

The attacker impressed enough at his hometown club to earn a contract at Costa Rica’s premier club Saprissa in 2006. After a handful of fruitful years at Saprissa, Arrieta moved stateside to join Columbus Crew, where he tallied 17 goals and nine assists in three seasons.

A veteran of the Costa Rican national team, Arrieta earned the Golden Boot during the team’s successful run to win the 2013 Cop Centroamericana.

So far this offseason, the Cosmos have lost productive wingers Walter Restrepo and Leo Fernandes, as well as legendary striker Raul. Talks are reportedly still ongoing with forward Gaston Cellerino, whose hat trick in the NASL championship final propelled the Cosmos to victory.

Nice pick up, He’ll help tremendously in the attack.

  • MTF

Picking up MLS castaways now. Retirement league! Lol

  • joe the plumber

    Well he’s 32 , to play.in.mls , you need to be 35 +

    • DanGerman

Well Joe he’s already played in MLS so that kinda blows your theory apart.

  • Kevin

this seems like a solid pick up, maybe I panicked a little too early

    • DanGerman

Dunno Kevin I think it was justified, remember at this point last year the Cosmos already had Raul signed and most of the attacking side of the team was filled out. Fast forward to this year and this is the first real signing. A LOT of good NASL players like PC and HEINEMANN signed with other teams early on while the Cosmos did little. Hopefully they can get some more quality creative players to help with the holes up front.

  • Kevin

you’re right Dan, see now you got me panicking again. We have lost a lot and it does seem that the solid NASL players out there have all been picked up. Henneman would have been nice.

    • DanGerman

I can’t for the life of me understand how the Cosmos didn’t make a run at him or PC for that matter. He DID sign for a lot of money but nothing the Cosmos couldn’t have matched.

One name for you Fernando Torres

        • Sammy the Red Bull

Torres is on about $250,000 a week at Atletico coupled with the bad ankle injury he picked up a couple days ago, I doubt he is coming to the U.S., MLS or NASL.

          • DanGerman

Agreed,Torres also absolutely loves Atletico Madrid and he’s finally found some form after his horrendous time at Chelsea. He’s going to retire there I can almost guarantee it.

      • William

the only reason would be if the caveman didn’t fit into the way Gio wants his team to play.

  • Hernando Peralta

    Again and again, WHO CARES.?

    • William

hey u little puke I told u to BUZZ OFFFFFFF

    • Mrs. Garber

      You do apparently Mr Peralta.

  • Kevin

I did see an article though that did say the Cosmos had thought about him though. How old is he?

    • DanGerman

31 but he’s going to cost an arm and a leg and with his injury history I don’t think its wise to spend that money.

  • Don’t be nervous Kevin, the front office is very active in the player market at the moment. They haven’t let us down before when it comes to quality player acquisition.

    • William

I agree Gio’s connections are far and wide.
