Cosmos’ Senna to take part in Pope Francis inspired “Match For Peace”

Marcos Senna will take a short leave from the New York Cosmos to serve a higher calling.

The Villarreal legend joins the likes of Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto’o, Ronaldinho and Roberto Baggio for the “Inter-religious Match For Peace” in Rome on September 1st.

Recently retired Inter Milan legend Javier Zanetti is the brains behind the event, inspired after enjoying the audience of Pope Francis last year.

“Sport is a tool for communicating the values which foster the good of the human beings and contribute to build a more peaceful and fraternal society,” the Pope is quoted as saying. “Let’s think about loyalty, perseverance, friendship, sharing and solidarity.”

“The most important thing isn’t the match, but the message of peace that the Pope wants to give the world,” Zanetti said at a press conference Monday.

The match will serve to promote peace and raise funds for at-risk children through Zanetti’s charitable organization, the Pupi Foundation.

Despite the proximity of the event to the team’s calendar, Senna will be still available for Saturday’s encounter against Indy Eleven.
