New York Cosmos to face winner of Italians, Express in Open Cup debut

For all of the success the original New York Cosmos garnered, they were never able to win a U.S. Open Cup — mainly because they refused to participate in the tournament.

That all changes this year.

The USSF has announced their third round pairings for this year’s tournament, and it comes with an interesting wrinkle. The Cosmos will play the winner of the second round match between storied NPSL side Brooklyn Italians and PDL side New Jersey Express.

Once looked upon as an inconvenience by the original Cosmos, the U.S. Open Cup has taken on new life and meaning to the present day side. Not only is the tournament their only route towards CONCACAF Champions League play, it also represents a rare opportunity for the Cosmos to potentially take on MLS competition.

If the defending Soccer Bowl champions advance in the third round, it becomes a likely probability that they face the New York Red Bulls thanks to the Open Cup’s regional draw. That match would take place during the week of June 10-18th.

  • Will certainly be paying close attention to NY Greek AA and Icon FC next week. Even then, it is not like the NY Cosmos can plead financial and timing factors like the amateur clubs, so who knows who they may get matched up if they advance.

Hopefully they’ll be a stream available

Not a Cosmos fan, but hoping they draw [Product Advertisement] New York as their MLS opponent and then pull of the upset.
