Cosmos Jimmy Maurer named NASL Player of the Month

Cosmos Maurer NASL player of the month

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Behind the New York Cosmos’ wildly successful foray into the Spring season has been the club’s unsung hero, goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer.

Well, he was unsung — until now.

The North American Soccer League has named Maurer the Player of the Month for April.

“We have a lot of great players in this league, so this is very exciting for both me and the team,” Maurer said. “It’s a great honor, but I’m staying focused because we still have a long year ahead of us.”

The vote was based on the total tally of league wide media.

The former New York Red Bull supplemental draft pick has led the team from the back for the better part of two seasons. He earned three shutouts in four matches, conceding all of one goal in that time span. All this after being named to the NASL Best XI for the close of the 2014 campaign.

“Jimmy has worked really hard and deserves to be recognized as the Player of the Month,” said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese.

The undefeated Cosmos are set to make their Brooklyn debut, invading MCU Park in Coney Island with Saturday to take on the visiting Ottawa Fury FC. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
