New York Cosmos COO Erik Stover promised a total of 8-10 signings during the winter break. That has been accomplished. His goal to loan players out to earn playing time, however, has been a seemingly more difficult affair.

Until now. Stefan Dimitrov becomes the first Cosmos player of the modern era to be loaned. His destination? The team’s old rival; the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

“This is a great opportunity for Stefan to get some games in and keep up his fitness,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “I wish him the best at the Strikers and I hope he is able to come back to the Cosmos in top shape.”

Dimitrov, 28, will be immediately eligible to play in his first taste of NASL action.

“I’m looking forward to giving my all in Ft. Lauderdale, then returning and putting that experience to work for the Cosmos,” Dimitrov was quoted via press release. “I played under (Strikers coach) Daryl Shore for a year at the Fire, so he knows what kind of player I am. I’m excited because he knows how to help me develop on the pitch and will know the best way to utilize me.”

Dimitrov has been a part of nearly every physical aspect of this new era of the Cosmos. He played for the team’s PDL side and also participated in the Paul Scholes Testimonial match at Old Trafford in 2011.

The New York Cosmos will host Dimitrov’s new team for their season opener, August 3rd at Hofstra University.
