Cosmos Get Lucky: Mkosana leaves Rowdies, joins rivals in New York

Lucky Mkosana has always caused fits for the New York Cosmos each time he has suited up for the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

The Cosmos solution? If you can’t beat ’em, sign ’em!

The long-haired, diminutive striker has left Tampa Bay to join the Cosmos ahead of the 2015 season.

“I’m extremely excited about joining the team,” Mkosana said in a club statement. “The Cosmos play an attacking style that really suits my strengths and I believe this is a good fit for me.”

The 27-year-old Zimbabwe native is coming off of a difficult year with the Rowdies.  While appearing in 26 matches, he only earned eight starts and scored two goals; a steep drop off from his eye-popping production with USL Pro side City Islanders, where he spearheaded their attack with 14 goals through 26 appearances.  Prior to his stint in USL Pro, Mkosana was drafted by the Chicago Fire as the 23rd overall pick in 2012, but did not sign with the club.

Since then, Mkosana has made a living as a spark plug off the bench for each team he has joined; an element the Cosmos sorely missed, particularly amongst their forward corps.

“Lucky adds pace, strength, and is a goal-scoring threat,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He gives our attacking options a real boost.”
