Cosmos legend Marcos Senna to retire at end of Fall season

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Marcos Senna has finally decided to hang up his boots.

The New York Cosmos star, who will turn 39-years-old this July, has extended his contract through the Fall season, set to retire by year’s end.

“I’ve been blessed to have had the career I’ve had and fortunate to play with some truly exceptional players and teams,” Senna said in a team statement. “Right now, my body feels great and I want to make sure that I’m able to retire while I’m playing well and on my own terms.

“The move to New York and joining the Cosmos has been fantastic for my family and we’ve experienced some truly unforgettable memories here in the U.S.”

Senna was the leading force behind the Cosmos 2013 Fall Championship season and their Soccer Bowl victory, netting the game winning goal with an unforgettable free kick against the Atlanta Silverbacks. Injuries derailed him in the 2014 season, but he has come back strong in 2015, earning a goal in seven starts for the club. Senna has made a total of 43 appearances for the club, earning 11 goals and three assists.

“From the day that he signed with us, Marcos has been a tremendous presence,” head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “His leadership has helped the team and he’s played at an incredibly high level for us. We’ve been honored to have Marcos with us the past two years and he will be a part of the Cosmos family forever.”

His run with the Cosmos continues this weekend, with a chance at collecting some silverware. The New York Cosmos take on Jacksonville at Hofstra on the 13th. A victory assures them the NASL Spring Championship trophy — and a spot in the 2015 playoff race.

“Cosmos Legend” implies he became a legend while with the Cosmos, which he most certainly did not..

  • Fair point, but to today’s Cosmos fans, he is every bit their legend. Hence the designation.

  • slowleftarm

Wow, seems like it’s pretty easy to achieve “legend” status with Hempstead supporters.

  • The realist

Not like Dave Van de Bergh or Roberto Donadoni with the Folks in Harrison, eh?

Nice article – enjoyed reading it. Found the events and description outside of the game most interesting.

Luckily, this is a (well written) puff piece and RS won’t have the same issues with it when compared to the accuracy of their notorious UVA hack-job.

  • Kevin

Thank you RB and NYCFC fans for checking on the Cosmos again today. Always appreciate your adolescent comments.

  • Alan Smithee

Or MCFCB legend VILLA VILLA INVISIBILLA!

  • MLS 2

Can cosmos just buy red bull already.
There’s no future in red bull.
Garber needs to do something with red bull.

  • Anonymous

    Where’s NYCFC’s legend? Oh! That’s right! Lol

  • slowleftarm

I sure wouldn’t call those guys legends.

  • slowleftarm

If ownership would get their wallets out, things would be fine.

  • MLS 2

Trust me, its not a wallet thing.
So if your children misbehave and aren’t happy with you or your wife after getting them a new ps4, then you would still get your wallet out.

  • DanGerman

Well since this Cosmos team have only existed for a little over a year I’m sure Villa will achieve “legend” status by next year. So everything is on track.

  • Larry’s A Simpleton

NYCFC Legends? Nope none yet. After only 14 total games there hasnt been time. Of course it goes without saying anyone with half a brain knows that. But since we’re talking f.cosmos fanboys (border line retards) that has to be explained.

With 17000 sth and 28000 average attd at home we dont need to invent faux legends like senna to get people into out building. senna is lucky he isnt a horse, because if he was they would have taken him out behind the barn and shot him. cosmos legend, lol

    Senna = class

Raul is awesome, but this guy is the reason Raul is here.

    Hope he retires a champ.

You are obsessed with the Cosmos. You comment on every piece about them. You need help. Please seek it.

  • Scott

One of the most underrated CDM in the world. Glad I got to see him play live before he hangs up the boots.

  • trollleftarm

Why don’t you and your fellow trolls take your circle jerk back over to the crap-team forums. you know, the place where you retards can pretend your team doesn’t suck heroically. hee haw, hee haw

(It’s a rip from your own comment to a Cosmos fan, in case you don’t recognize it.)

  • Larry’s slow left arm is a simpleton

We are lonely, desperate men who need attention to re-affirm our masculinity to ourselves; AND our own teams aren’t all that interesting really.

  • Larry’s A Simpleton

nassau county globtrotter fanboys are so bitter. you guys still gonna be fans when this farce relocates to new haven? burro boys hee haw

  • zensum

It all comes down to whether you think…this team…is that team…if it’s the current nasl cosmos I guess he could be considered a legend…best player during the crucial launch period…but a legend of our old hometown team…no…he’s not that…

  • Larry’s slow left arm is a simpleton

I am obsesses with Cosmos because my own team is terrible and I can’t accept my deep hidden dark desire to wear green and hang out in the locker room at Hofstra! I am a desperate, desperate man. Please help me.

  • OpenCupFan

    It’s the same club.

Ownership of the Cosmos passed down from one owner to another until this current group took over. There was no gap in ownership or period where the Cosmos name was in legal limbo because no one owned it.

If there had been a gap, MLS would have taken it – you are aware the MLS has been trying to buy the Cosmos for 20 years?

    #greentideworldwide

  • chepe

True, MLS have tried many times to buy the cosmos from its former owner, but no luck. Even if Marcos senna was not a cosmos player,he is still a legend.

  • zensum

The legal argument has always been the weakest one for me…

So Pinton kept the name in good legal shape so he could use it for his camps…so what…no players…no games…no fans…over decades…to me means no team…

I once used the Brooklyn Dodgers as an analogy…rest assured the LA Dodgers for marketing purposes have kept the name in their possession and in similarly good legal shape for over half a century…but if they were to buy the Cyclones from the Mets and rename them the Brooklyn Dodgers no one in Brooklyn or elsewhere would consider the new Brooklyn Dodgers to be the boys of summer…some folks in Brooklyn might think it was a nice tribute to the original team…but the same team…no way…not even if living ex-Dodgers players or their widows were involved…

I’d submit the metro area understands the difference…and in every way…fanbase size…attendance…media coverage…people are saying it’s not the same team…

  • Cosmos is your Daddy

Go back to Metrofantic you idiot.

  • zensum

No not going back there…not part of the RedBullOut crowd…no…just a RBNY / Metro fan who like thousands of others was a Cosmos fan back in the day…

The reality is that any decent RedBullArena crowd contains far more fans of the original Cosmos than any crowd at Hofstra…it is if fact one element in the lackluster fanbase launch of the nasl cosmos…the new team hasn’t been able to pull back together the still living / still living in the metro area Cosmos fanbase…we’re staying put…

In fact I consider RBNY / Metro as the linear top flight successor to be more Cosmos than the nasl cosmos…and thousands of others agree…

  • Kevin

Dude your the one on the cosmos forum.for everything. The author of the article wrote he was a cosmos legend. Not the fans that follow the cosmos. But u and your’re other blowhard just can’t stop…it’s amazing how you twist stuff on every piece…not all cosmos fans think alike in these forums..u good on Senna, for what? Because the author called him a legend? He’s done as well as an older soccer player can do in this league. Cosmos fans have enjoyed watching him play…so what do u care… worry about your NYCFC and their play or your red bulls and why they can’t stop the mighty Philadelphia Union..

  • Anonymous

Um, one goal doesn’t make you a legend. Even if it was in the championship game. He didn’t play on the team long enough to even be considered a legend. Senna is just a guy that’s been vacationing in New York before his retirement.

  • Cosmos is your Daddy

That is complete bull ****, i am an original Cosmos fan, at the re launch i met many more just like myself, so your full of it, the same way your full of it on Metrofantaic, stop being a whinny bitch & support what you love, THE NEW YORK FUCKING COSMOS !
Your so wrong it’s scary, spend some time with the diehards & you will sing a different tune.

  • Cosmos is your Daddy

Cosmos the name is a talking point> RED BULL fans,NYCFC abomination fans are terrified at the mere mention of the Cosmos. Biggest,Baddest name in American soccer history next to Beth Steel !

  • Cosmos is your Daddy

Zensum if you saw the passion & love for this team on the Atlanta trip for the Soccer Bowl, you wouldn’t have that point of view, it was spectacular, from the first whistle to the storming of the field, something 20 years of RBNY/MEtro never had.

  • OpenCupFan

You’re so wrong, if the Dodgers returned to MLB they would get crazy love all over NYC area – but I’m sure MLB won’t allow another team in NY – which is frankly a problem of the franchise system. Brooklyn Dodgers would be popular immediately.
    .
The Cosmos aren’t more popular around here – right now – because they aren’t in MLS, not because people don’t think they are the same team. Americans aren’t used to the concept of independent clubs, that’s the difference. That’s a problem with the fan base, not the Cosmos.
    .
You MLS bots make all the excuses your can, but if the Cosmos HAD NOT rejected MLS, then you would all be on your knees at the altar of the Cosmos, instead you got a second hand copy of ManCity which doesn’t care about you at all, but you still support it because it in MLS, not because the team has done anything for you or even values you, but only because it is in MLS.
    .
Get your head out of your ass and stop making excuses, the Cosmos are New Yorks only soccer club.
    .

  • OpenCupFan

Cosmos is your Daddy has a good point – if the Cosmos aren’t **** then why do MLS bots all over the country get so worked up over the INDEPENDENT club and fans.

    #greentideworldwid

  • trollleftarm

Yes we are. And no, they aren’t. (No Henry, no interest.)

  • trollleftarm

Pick which is more like original Cosmos:

    1. One tentacle of a single-entity octopus, leased as one branded outlet, by an energy-drink concern. Known throughout New Jersey. No league championships.

    2. Independent team, not named after a product, player signings decided and executed globally as other teams (no super-duper re-entry allocation rights shuffle). League championships.

  • Prez

Word, I never really got that, they have their own **** franchises to worry about. Oh well..

  • Prez

Then I guess the Portland Timbers and Seattle Sounders aren’t the same teams then as the private independent entities were dissolved and new league owned franchise offshoots of the same name were formed. Cosmos on the other hand were never dissolved at the end of NASL, but then was restructured ownership to an LLC in 2010 to bring back the sporting branch of the club….. Soooooooooo…

  • Anthony

No he’s a legitimate Cosmos all time great player on his 2.5 years here alone. No one cares what some anonymous troll has to say about it.

  • Anthony

    They’ve logged a total of 16 professional seasons as a franchise. #mathfordummies
