Cosmos Sign Midfielder Andrea Mancini

After weeks of training with the New York Cosmos, Italian midfielder Andrea Mancini has officially signed with the NASL side.

Mancini had been under contract with MLS’ DC United but was released to complete the move to New York this week.

“Andrea is a young player with good experience,” said Cosmos Head Coach Giovanni Savarese. “He has shown great dedication in training and he will add depth to the team as we push for a strong finish to the season.”

Mancini, 24, came up in the academy systems of Inter Milan and Manchester City before breaking into the professional ranks in England, Spain and Hungary. He joined up DC United in February of this year during preseason training but only featured in friendly matches and the club’s U.S. Open Cup exit earlier in the year.

The midfielder is the son of Italian manager Roberto Mancini, who left his post at Inter Milan just last month.

“I’ve been training with the team for quite a few weeks and I really enjoy the coaching style and atmosphere,” said Mancini. “I’m focused on helping the team at this important time in the season.”

The Cosmos currently sit first in the NASL’s Fall Season and combined standings but have yet to lock up a spot in The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason tournament. They kick off a critical two-match homestand this weekend with a match against fourth-place Minnesota United FC. The Cosmos will then host FC Edmonton, who sit in second in both league tables but still control their own fate as they have two matches in hand on the Cosmos.
