New York Cosmos sign NASL Best XI striker Hans Denissen

The New York Cosmos set out to address the lack of production from their forward corps this offseason. Now, they may have found a key solution to their woes.

The club announced Thursday morning that former San Antonio Scorpions forward Hans Denissen has signed with the club. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Hans will be a great addition to our forward line next season,” Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese said. “He is a very dynamic and smart player who will provide a different dimension to our team. We are excited to include another great professional on our club.”

Denissen, 29, is a Dutch striker with overseas and, most importantly, NASL experience. He made 21 appearances and 19 starts for the Scorpions, registering a team-high 12 goals while adding a pair of assists to his ledger. A seven-time player of the week honoree, Denissen received the ultimate year-end honor, named one of three strikers to the NASL Best XI Team for 2013.

“I’m so excited to be joining the New York Cosmos,” Denissen said. “This is a club not only with a great history, but a great future, too. Having played against the Cosmos last season, I know this is a team that prides itself on playing an attractive style of attacking soccer. I’m really looking forward to joining this group.”

A native of Tilburg, Netherlands, Denissen signed with the Scorpions in 2012. Before that, he played nine years in Europe, starting in 2003 with his local club Willem II Tilburg, He moved on to Dutch second division clubs RBC Roosendaal and MVV before heading to Cypriot club Ayia Napa and Finnish club FC Haka. He returned to Willem Il before joining the Scorpions in 2012.
