New York Cosmos in talks with Samuel Eto’o

Following reports out of the UK, Empire of Soccer can independently confirm that the New York Cosmos have been in contact with Everton striker and former Chelsea man, Samuel Eto’o.

Eto’o, 33, signed a two-year deal with Everton this past summer.  However, manager Roberto Martinez recently put the Cameroonian striker on the market, leaving him off of Tuesday’s FA Cup encounter against West Ham thanks to bubbling interest in the player.

“A couple of clubs contacted us in the last 12 hours, so I decided to leave him out,” Martinez told reporters.  “We will see what is best for all of us.”

A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed reports that the Cosmos have thrown their hat in the ring for Eto’o’s services, claiming “there have been some discussions” between both parties, but offered no details on those conversations.

For their part, ESPN UK reveals the Cosmos’ monetary offer falls short of Eto’o’s demands.  According to their report, there is talk of a short-term stay with the Cosmos, followed by a big money move to Asia or the Mideast.  Cosmos ownership, including Sela Sports and Chairman Seamus O’Brien, have valuable connections and business dealings in Asia as a first-in-market powerhouse, engaged in sporting enterprises throughout the continent.  Whether that can lead to a big money deal with another club is debatable.

Our source, however, labels those details to be “a little exaggerated.”

ESPN UK also cites interest from Serie A side, Sampdoria, and interest from MLS teams, including the Seattle Sounders.
