Report: Cosmos target Roque Santa Cruz to stay with Malaga

The New York Cosmos have quietly begun searching for a big name striker to solve their scoring ails.

Roque Santa Cruz will not be it.

According to a report out of Spain, Malaga has shut the door on any transfer talk for the Paraguayan striker. The Cosmos reportedly pursued Santa Cruz, but Malaga’s directors made clear they had no intention of parting with the forward. In fact, Malaga manager Javi Gracia envisions Santa Cruz as his starting forward this season despite having a somewhat lackluster campaign last season.

La Opinion De Malaga reports the Cosmos never even had the chance to pose an offer.

That puts the Cosmos back to square one in their search for firepower, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. This weekend’s loss to the Tampa Bay Rowdies exhibited just how impotent New York’s attack has become, with several chances being generated at goal, but no one there to finish. Offseason signing Mads Stokkelien had a pair of quality chances but failed once again to find the back of the net. Likewise, a spry and lively Jemal Johnson also shanked clear opportunities.

The club continues pursuing Real Madrid legend Raul, who is currently playing the role of “head supervisor” of the Qatari U-20 team in the Cotif 2014 tournament in Spain. Raul is also being chased down by Madrid to take an executive role within the club.
