New York Cosmos sign Walter Restrepo

The New York Cosmos made their second signing in four days, this time adding San Antonio Scorpions playmaker and two-time NASL Best XI midfielder, Walter Restrepo.

“He’s a very good offensive talent with the skills to break down defenders out wide,“ said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese in a club statement. “He offers something different that perhaps we didn’t have last year.”

Restrepo, 26, recorded three goals and four assists with the NASL champion Scorpions last season. Prior to that, he served three seasons with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, highlighted by a standout 2012 season where he lead the league with eight assists.

“It was a difficult decision for me to leave San Antonio, especially after winning the NASL title there last year,” said Restrepo. “However, the Cosmos’ vision and commitment to winning and the opportunity to play with players such as Raúl and Marcos Senna was one that was hard to turn down.”

Restrepo joins a crowded Cosmos midfield, which includes recent Philadelphia Union loanee Leo Fernandes, El Salvadorian captain Andres Flores, Adam Moffat, Sebastian Guenzatti, Hagop Chirishian and defensive midfielders Danny Szetela, Dane Murphy and Senna. While garnering success as an attacking midfielder, Savarese looks to use him as a wing option, putting him in direct competition with Guenzatti, Chirishian and Fernandes.

Restrepo is the fifth Cosmos acquisition this offseason, following Fernandes, Lucky Mkosana, Moffat and of course, Raul.

This is a solid signing. Restrepo is a solid winger, who adds speed, experience, knowledge and heart to the team. He was a critical piece of the Scorpions line up and having taken that piece away from the champs is also a plus. The Cosmos are having a solid off season and I’m excited to see how they do this season.

I would like to see him play centrally where he’d have little defensive responsibilitiy and where the Cosmos lacked creativity last year.
