CUNY Playoff: Staten Island, Brooklyn Advance

NCAA logoBrooklyn College (9-7-2) and the College of Staten Island (10-6-2) advanced in quarterfinal round action in the City University of New York Athletic Conference, setting up an exciting pair of semifinal games this weekend.

CSI got past Baruch, 1-0, on Wednesday at Randall’s Island. The goal came in the 77th minute, with the freshman Staten Island native Joe Bolella curling the ball in off the goalpost. It will face off with top-seeded Lehman College in the Bronx on Saturday at noon.

Brooklyn upended Hunter College, 3-1, after conceding an early goal. The Bulldogs scored three unanswered goals after the half, with the first two coming four minutes apart. Senior midfielder Jordy Ortiz scored the equalizer in the 55th minute, off an assist from junior Ahmad Aly. Freshman standout Azizjon Ziyaev netted the game winner shortly after, converting from the top of the box. Aly scored one of his own to finish the scoring, ensuring his side would see out the win. On Saturday, Brooklyn will face No. 2 seed John Jay (1 p.m., Randall’s Island).

Undefeated in the conference, Lehman College (11-4-1) is the clear favorite to repeat as champion. It has not lost a conference game since 2015. This year, it did not concede a goal in a conference game. In 2016, Lehman defeated CSI, 1-0, in the CUNYAC semifinals on its way to the championship. In their previous three meetings, Lehman has dispatched CSI by the same 1-0 score, and it will hope to make it four on Saturday.

John Jay (8-6-1) will be hoping to win its ticket to the conference championship game against Brooklyn over the weekend. In their regular-season match, John Jay defeated Brooklyn, 2-1. This year marks the most successful season in John Jay’s history, and they will be ambitious to extend the season for another week, with the championship game scheduled for Nov. 4.
