David Beckham purchases land for MLS stadium in Miami

David Beckham’s plans for a Major League Soccer team in Miami took another step closer to becoming reality on Thursday. Beckham and his ownership group announced the purchase of six acres of private land needed for the planned soccer-specific stadium.

The site in total is nine acres in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood; Beckham’s group still has to reach a deal for the remaining land, which is currently owned by Miami-Dade County. This is the first time Beckham has gone so far as to purchase land in over two years of speculation and negotiation regarding the eventual MLS franchise.

In the past, Beckham’s group had focused on sites along Miami’s waterfront, and in the Little Havana neighborhood adjacent to Marlins Park. In neither case was Beckham able to reach a deal for the land needed. With MLS requiring a stadium deal to be completed before confirming the franchise, Beckham and the team have been in a state of limbo almost since the day they were announced.

The venue, if and when it is built, is expected to hold 25,000 seats, making it one of the largest soccer-specific stadiums in MLS. Renderings of the stadium were shown to the public earlier this year. If all goes according to plan, Miami could join MLS in time for the 2018 season.

The lengthy delay and uncertainty surrounding Beckham’s project have opened the door for competition in Miami. Miami FC will begin play in the NASL in two weeks time. The second-tier side has taken a simpler route and will play their home games at already-built FIU Stadium.

Inter Miami city here it comes :)
    It’s going to be a crazy 2018
With LAFC and Miami coming in, who will end up with zlatan, cr7, Rooney, chicharito, aguero and don’t forget that Mexico and China are going after big names as well.
If Miami and LAFC can get their stadium, why can’t sounders, Vancouver get their own, same thing with Columbus.
