Bad news descended upon the New York Red Bulls Monday night as captain Dax McCarty confirmed on Twitter that he will be sidlined for at least the month of August with a fractured tibia.

McCarty left Sunday’s game against the Chicago Fire in the 42nd minute after a collision with a Fire player that left him clutching at his leg. The Red Bull captain, known for his toughness, took to the sideline for a few minutes before being substituted for youngster Sean Davis.

The loss of McCarty will tremendously impact the team. He is not only the team captain but is also seen as the defensive boss of the midfield. He has played at least 30 games in each of his past four seasons and most recently tied the record for most starts for the franchise, tying Mike Petke.

Options for the team in the defensive midfield position will be somewhat limited. Sean Davis will more than likely step into the role in the short term. Beyond that, most of New York’s best prospects in the midfield are still very young and green, such as Tyler Adams. The month of August will also be jam-packed with fixtures as the team begins CONCACAF Champions League play this Wednesday at Red Bull Arena.
