Decision on Lampard’s Man City loan extension coming “next week;” may miss start of NYCFC season

Talk of an extension to Frank Lampard’s loan in Manchester City has been the subject of rumors and speculation for some time.

Soon, all will be made clear.

New York City FC Director of Football, Claudio Reyna, is heading to Manchester on December 10th to discuss the future of their Designated Player, and he is leaving all options open — including the chance of the English legend missing the start of the season.

“I’ll be heading over to Manchester on the night of the expansion draft for a week and have the conversations with the technical staff there and the directors there to make the right decisions,” Reyna said.  “We will have something next week.”

Lampard joined Manchester City on loan this past September.  Since arriving, he has notched five goals in ten appearances across all competitions — including a nice finish against Southampton at midweek.   Garnering player the month honors during his short stay, Lampard has become an integral part of the City landscape, setting up an interesting tug of war between the fellow City Football Group sides.

Reyna would not speculate on whether Lampard would make preseason training with the club.  In fact, when asked if Lampard’s loan would extend past the season opener, Reyna simply said “really, we don’t know” — a far cry from the team’s stance mere weeks ago.

“Great players adjust and get to know each other really quick,” Reyna said of Lampard’s potential absence.  “I don’t think it would be a huge disadvantage if he is not here from day one [preseason].”

For his part, head coach Jason Kreis did his best to skirt speculation.

“I think you will learn with me very quickly that the word ‘expect’ with me doesn’t happen very often. I try to go into things without expectations, both with Frank and how I think the team is going to do and everything else,” said Kreis.  “What I know is a decision, we are hearing, should be made in the middle of December.  It will be made by the people that own this club and I have full trust they will make a decision that is best for Frank, best for Manchester City and best for New York City.

“At the end of the day, I have full trust in that decision and we will certainly live by whatever it is.”
