U.S. defender Fabian Johnson signs with Borussia Mönchengladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach finally put all the rumors to rest, announcing U.S. international Fabian Johnson has signed a new four year contract, ending his three year relationship with Hoffenheim at season’s end.

“Fabian Johnson is a very interesting player who can play attacking or defensive roles on either flank. He comes on a free transfer and we’re delighted he’s opted to join us,” Mönchengladbach Sporting Director Max Eberl announced on the club’s official website.

The news ends weeks of speculation that have seen the defender linked to Borussia as well as several other clubs from England. While Borussia was always the accepted front runner, neither party gave credence to the ongoing transfer chatter.

The 26-year-old defender remained coy about a move even after playing against his eventual team this weekend in a 2-2 draw. Johnson helped Hoffenheim rally towards a point, helping his side earn a penalty, which teammate Sejad Salihović did well to convert.

It was just the latest contribution in a list of service at his soon to be former club.

“We’ve fought for Fabian’s signature since the summer, but he has decided to leave us,” Hoffenheim coach Markus Gisdol told the press earlier this month.

Johnson has been a versatile and dependable part of the Hoffenheim side since his move from Wolfsburg in 2011. He has made 91 Bundesliga appearances, gathering six goals and 12 assists. Since his inclusion in the U.S. National Team in 2012, he has also earned 18 caps and looks a lock for the World Cup in Brazil.
