Former Cosmos Denissen signs with Atlanta Silverbacks

ATLANTA – Around this time last season, NASL fans were abuzz as the New York Cosmos managed the shock signing of Hans Denissen from the San Antonio Scorpions.

This year, they quietly released the Dutch striker after an underwhelming 2014 campaign.

Now, Denissen has found a new home — this time, with the Atlanta Silverbacks.

“Hans is a tremendous coup for us,” Atlanta head coach Gary Smith said in a club statement. “He has great experience in both NASL and Europe. Hans is a very gifted player with a creative mind, great ability and vision, who is effective from both open play and dead ball situations.”

Denissen, 30, is an NASL Best XI forward for 2013, where he scored a whopping 12 goals for the Scorpions. He came to the Cosmos an injured commodity at the start of 2014.  Once back in health, Denissen struggled to break through the starting XI, managing just 11 appearances for New York on the season.

Despite the disappointing stint in New York, Denissen will be looked upon to resurrect the ailing Silverbacks this season.  The NASL side is undergoing an ownership change, with the league currently running the club.  As the transition plays out, the Silverbacks will look towards Denissen to repeat the achievements of his 2013 season.

“I’m very excited to have Hans on board,” Smith said. “It’s great to see the roster is taking real shape as we get closer to the start of our preseason camp.”

I don’t understand the NASL. How was this player permitted to change clubs without a blind weighted re-allocation re-entry waiver discovery draft?

    What a crazy approach!
